If you buy a domain and do a 301 redirect to you main site, do you then accrue all the pagerank and backlinks for yourself? Or is some of it lost?

One example fo how 301 redirect can help is:
A website can be viewed in two urls, http://example.com and http://www.example.com
There is a big debate as to both urls can show duplicate content in the eyes of google
Some say google bots has the ability to identify both as from the same domain, but effectively if you see, that is theoretically and practically as well, when you type the urls as such go to see the websites, it means both urls exist in the net, so u ask me yes there are two copies of your website
So if you do a permanent reidirect or 301 of your http://example.com to http://www.example.com, first it will eliminate the duplicate content issues, second all the backlinks pointing at your http://example.com will start passing on the benefit to http://www.example.com
As late as July 09, i have been able to do this and improve rankings and backlink counts for one of my old websites where in i had forgotten to do it earlier
If your host has a Cpanel, then you can do it from the admin area itself without changing the .htaccess file

If you are renaming your website pages and you have incoming links to the old pages.

Then you need to use a 301 redirect to tell the search engine that the file has moved permanently and it will pass on juice and backlinks.
