If your content is unique and has nice backlinks, u would be ranking 1st. for certain keywords.

If your search term is unique enough, ofcourse you can!

Having a sitemap alone won't do it!

    Yes. It's definately possible.

I had a site that was new, with no pr, and with no backlinks and it was ranked #1 for a keyword in google. The funny thing was as soon as I decided to start exchanging links, my site dropped to like 50 for that keyword.....will never understand google. My site is back at #1 for that keyword now.

Exactly, to reach #1 for competitive keywords is almost impossible. Websites that compete for these keywords have thousands of backlinks and have very likely high PR.
A PR0 website can reach #1 for some very obscure keywords that no one cares to search. That should not be seen as an achievement.

Come on guy! Using free software to try and rank on a search engine is corny. None of that stuff even works, maybe for a keyword phrase like "sysop used free software to get here" but not anything that would put some money in your pocket.

What corny? Could you mind explained a little bit?

    I never offended you whatsoever?

Anyway.. have you try the tools or you just lazy to read the fact that Google spidered website that integrate ror.xml files.

Or maybe you don't even know what the sitemap is.....

I was'nt trying to bag on you what I mean is that you do not need software programs in order to rank on a search engine. Google can spider almost any file extension out there so that does not make the software anything special.

If you ask me real seo's do not use this kind of stuff, it was made for lazy people who do not want to take the time and optimize a site the way that is suppose to be done.

    That's good news.

How did you do it? And what did you change, if anything?

it is very possible. you just need to find a very niche subject that is poorly represented.

i'm a noob and I managed to do it with my first site. find a niche, get a good domain and write some content.

Definately...I mean as you get nearer the top your website will naturally have a reasonable PR anyway.

Type in 'London caterers' in google...and the website I did SEO for will be at the top. And that hasnt got and amazing PR.
