How do you price for SEO?

Just curious a question for the SEO pros out there or anyone charging people for SEO.

How do you price up this kind of word?
Do you charge by the hour? By the project?
If so how do you know how much work or how long your going to have to spend?

The company that I pay to help me with SEO and linkbuilding (teliad) charges me a minimum of 200€ per month for at least 3 months. 3 months because it is better to build links over a period of time and not just straight away. This price is for the project and if they do not spend the money that I have paid then it gets carried over for the next month.

You must first analyze the competition and the amount of onsite work that needs to be done. Then compare that to what your customer's expectations are i.e first 5 results on google, first 10, the number of keywords etc. That'll give you an idea of what you're up against in terms of hours you'll need to spend. Then translate that into your price. I don't think any good SEO services should go for under 300$ a month, unless there really aren't any specific goals set before you start.

Mostly it would range from 300-400$ a month. And is kind of expensive if you really want.

Depends where you're getting your business. If it's an ad in your local paper you can charge quite a bit more for what is probably an easier job as opposed to having to compete big time on sites like DP or hireafreelancer ect ect.

I think that the best way to charge is either for the project or montly maintenance.

Question - how do you monitor their spend? You mention that they pay back dollars that are not used for SEO or build links as if they are on retainer. Is it on the honor system?

I work in a small company and SEO is part of my job, so i guess the salary i got is part of the pricing of SEO.
Believe me, it is rather low!
    But, i love my job!

I am constantly updated about how they are using my money and what they are doing. I have used this company for a few years and so i guess a certain amount of trust is needed for this type of thing to work. Plus they don't pay me the money back they just deduct this amount from the next month so i don't pay as much if they don't use the money from the previous month

I have never performed SEO before but would like to give it a go. I am in the possition to perform SEO for a business I do work for whos site is in a terrible state!

I thought of proposing that I will work on SEO for the site and only take payment once conversions in the business increase.

    Is this a good idea?

    How would you do it?

I had got service from some seo guys who charged me for the entries. Entry/rate.
However, I have got a new guy, who used to charge me in $$$ to get top # 10 on google and maintain it there for few weeks,

As well as I have seen there are guys who have had some predefined things and sell that as a package and etc...

Some are there they get per hour - but do not go with this, it is risky.

Other options seems to be fine with me.

I don't do SEO for small clients, I will only do it for friends/business associates.

If someone wants to sell something and has a site, I will do there SEO for a percentage of profits, this means that i will work around the clock daily, and we both win.

I would only do a site for 1000 pounds a month minimum, i only like to work on competitive search terms.

Homebase SEOs can be paid a monthly of 150$ working 4 hours a day, 6days in a week. Depending on the project and hours spent per day.

OK so let's say you charge $400/mo. What do you deliver for that?

I have been building sites since 1999. Many of my clients are asking for SEO. What does a good offering look like?

This is a similar scenario to the possition I am in I am considering proposing to the guy I work for that I receive a % off the profits he makes. What kind of percentage would you charge?
