Keyword relevancy to page content is very poor

My site www.defending.com uses a magazine style theme, thus unless I use the keywords in the first paragraph of articles, which is unnatural, I will suffer this poor relevancy.

What should I do? Is this important enough to revise all my posts? Bear in mind that my posts are targeting different keywords to the homepage, and these pages have excellent keyword relevancy.

I used http://www.submitexpress.com/analyzer/ to check my homepage and posts. Here is what it says about my homepages:

Keyword relevancy to page content is very poor. However, this is not necessarily bad if you have a lot of content. The most important factor is to have your keywords on the page a few times. The keywords relevancy to page content is 50%.

Here is what is says about a post page:
Keyword relevancy to page content is excellent. The keywords relevancy to page content is 100%.

I know that inbound links and the text they contain are far more important than on-page SEO, but I'd like to get the on-page SEO right too.

In my experience you should have your main keywords mentioned at least a couple times on your home page, using a magazine style theme it's somewhat harder but as long as you have quality in-bound links pointed at the home page with the exact anchor text as your keywords you should be more than fine.

It looks like you have the All in One SEO Plugin installed, good job, but you have to make sure it's the updated version, it looks like your meta keywords and description may be getting pulled from your most recent post. You have to define your homepage meta inside the All in One SEO Plugin Settings.

    Edit:
One other thing you could also do is utilize the image alt="keyword phrase" for your homepage thumbnails, that would boost up the keyword density, remember that the spiders see the html.

thanks, my title and keywords are set in the SEO pack and not coming from the posts, but the posts dont target the homepage keywords, thus since i have a magazine theme without a fixed front page i dont have good keyword relevancy on the homepage.

i updated my logo with alt text (thanks for that). the thumbnails have alt text relevant to their posts already

I dont want to lose the magazine theme benefits by setting a set first post

Exactly, keep the magazine theme it make your site flow much better. As for optimization purposes, I would worry more about getting quality backlinks to your site that use the anchor text for the keywords you are trying to capture on, for the home page.
