    Hi!

I've been hosting websites on and off for a few years now, but nothing really bigger then about 1k visitors aday. I'm planning to step into a bigger marked in the nearest future, and therefore have to start taking my webhost setup seriously. Up until now, i've just been using cheap webhosts with "so called" unlimited bandwith. But I guess these kind of offers have a limit aswell.

When do you need to take the step up and get a premium host?
    1k?, 5k?, 10k? (visitors a day)

The site includes picture hosting and video stream aswell.

I know that you can calculate your sites bandwith on a really detailed level, if you add up all your files and so on,
but are their any rules of thumb or easy to apply formulas on how much bandwith you need for a regular site?

    Best regards
    Beanz

If you can't handle the server management then you get a premium host that offers you better customer support. If you site starts getting slow you go for a hosting that provides you with more dedicated resources. Premium host does not necessarily mean equate to greater dedicated resources.

In descending order of dedicated resources:

    dedicated server
    vps
shared hosting - currently you're here

You don't change hosting providers based on "what ifs". Hosting is cheap and plentiful. Change providers as and when there is a need for it. But always, always make sure you have backups.

There are many hosting providers who claim to offer unlimited disk space and bandwidth with the hosting packages they offer which is certainly not correct. As your website has a good amount of traffic, I would suggest you to consider a dedicated server from a hosting provider who offers fully managed servers with good quality support.

As you are unsure about your bandwidth requirements, you can start with a dedicated server with 2k or 3k GB bandwidth. Also, get a dedicated server from a hosting provider who offers easy upgrades so that you can upgrade your bandwidth or server easily if required :)

    Hi!

    Thanks for the feedback.

I understand that my question was kind off difuse, but I was basically wondering if there where any simple rules of thumb to atleast get an idea of what I need.

with 1000 visitors on a simple blog you should need atleast Xgb bandwith.

But I will start looking for a new host with a dedicated server, and take it from there.

You don't need a dedicated server for a small blog. Its way overkill. As I said before you should start small with simple shared hosting and buy more hosting as and when required.

1000 visitors would consume 1-1.5GB of bandwidth.

Well, a dedicated server is definitely the best hosting solution as it is fully dedicated to you. However, as your requirements are not as much, you can consider a VPS if you would like to have administrator access to the server on which your website is hosted.

A VPS is like a small dedicated server which is provided with administrator access and one can install applications on it very easily. Also, the resources provided with the VPS are fully dedicated to your websites which ensures better performance. In comparison to a shared hosting package, VPS is much better :)
