Are hyphons bad?

Discussion in 'Domain Names' started by Sam Designs, Aug 25, 2009.

The .com, .net and .org extensions to the domain without hyphons are all taken; however if I add a hyphon they all become available.

Would this be bad in the future, or would finding a different domain name be better?

    Thanks,
    Sam.

r u talking about 2 word domains ? or some random hyphenated domains ?

if they make good words for seo , marketing then its fine to choose

    I personally hate hyphenated names..

But I know that Germans love them. They use hyphens as a standard between two word names. As Chandan mentioned it does not make a difference to the SEs. But from a pure domainers perspective hyphens are crap.

What if I am going to develop this domain? It's not for the simple "let's buy it and resell it" game.

It is just as good as a normal domain - though the opinion about value is still divided. You won't see many popular hyphenated domains in top 100 lists do you?

However if you get 2 keywords in your domain name, search engines would give you preference because of the keywords - and thus give you traffic, as it is, no one likes to type these days in happy to click generation. Go for the hypen'ed one !

Hyphens are fine and are actually good for SEO. I see hyphen domains ranking well all the time.

Sure they are fine for SEO purposes.. If you want to develop and have no plans to resell by all means get the hyphen.. I was just giving you a domainers perspective..

The only problem with hyphened domains are that they are hard to remember and its difficult to advertise orally...

yeah, i agree. and they get no exact match bonus in the search engines.

it could work if it only has one hyphen, like:

    www.website-example.com

still doesn't get exact match though. i would steer clear of it but i would definetly not do two hyphens like this:

www.website-example-news.com - it looks so spammy when there are three hyphens
