I was contracted approx 2 weeks ago to promote a close friend of a friend's (who is an engineer) web site (Green PC). I will be promoting his page without spending a single dime as I wasn't paid an extreme amount of money. Why did I choose to market without spending a penny? 3 reasons. 1. The challenge. (of course) 2. The program is freeware. 3. I wasn't paid enough to spend any sort of $. Basically since the application is freeware it needs to earn revenue by 2 different means: 1. Advertisements. 2. Contracts with clients. Since selling CPU cycles is a fairly new introduction, its earnings potential is rather low (a few pennies per hour) and therefore advertisements need to compensate for it. so >> click through rates are important. The web site has been up for 13 days as of today. (website outlook doesn't even recognize it) I have been doing small promo things such as placing ads around town (at public transit stations), submission of software to DL sites, backlink generation, and some SEO optimization. The site went from 0 hits per day on the first day to to around 400-600 now (12 days later!). What is more stunning though is the web site currently earns about 3-7 dollars per day in ad revenue. CTR is sitting at around 8-15% which is pretty solid if you ask me! (see photo) So what have I done to achieve this? 1. Arranged ads so that they blend in with content. 2 per page. 2. Don't fill the entire page with advertisements. 3. Submit software to various download sites. 4. Submit free articles to PR sites. 5. Submit web site to Stumble Upon. 6. Create anchored ("Green PC") backlinks on comments & blogs. 7. Create this write up. So basically I will update this thread with progress every so often just to inform people of proper marketing on a budget. I see it as more of a project than anything else! My goal is to reach $100.00 in ads daily by the end of Sept. If I can do this, I will get paid a nice chunk!
Challenges are always good, We always learn something more from them. I liked the arranging advt. point. Hope you do your best and achieve your goal before sept.
