Which Domain Extensions to Buy?

Discussion in 'Domain Names' started by wordscientist, Aug 20, 2009.

This is my first time buying a domain name and I'm wondering..Should I buy several extensions and have them point to the .com name? And is buying .net and .org along with .com enough, or should .info and .us also be added to the mix?

Another related question...I see several domain names that I'd like to have, but the .com is taken. Could I buy the .org or .net, or is that just asking for legal troubles?

I can go for that; .com it is then. Guess it makes sense, considering that most Internet users probably type in .com. I just wasn't sure if I needed to buy the other domain extensions to cover my bases.

Sure, other extensions also can be bought to use. Make sure you can find some catchy and attractive ones, and you'd better try to promote them as possible as you can.

To sell or develop a domain .com is king but if you are looking to set up an online business then it is prudent to register .com/.net and you local country extension

You no need to buy all the extensions of your domain and point it to .com domain...

Also, there is no legal issues in registering a domain unless the domain a trademark of any other enterprise..

Huh, I wonder if that's why I saw a couple of big-time sites that only bought the .com. Maybe they trademarked their name and don't have to worry about anyone buying the other extensions?

to cover all your bases and future brand expansion i would buy the first 25 most popular domain extensions
having only .com is not enough anymore

As your chosen .com has been taken - look at similar keyphrase domains that you can use - .net is ok. you always have to be careful not to infringe on exsisting trademarks. If you see some use a known trademark do not asume you can too. They have either requested permission to use this as an affiliate etc or they have not paid any attention at all to the legalities of this.

If you can buy .com name, no need to buy .net, .org etc (unless if you have extra money then go for .net and/or .org as well)

Go for .net .. by the way, if you name consist of 2 or more keywords.. you can also consider the .com version but with hyphen between the keywords :)

.com every single time if you can get it. I was told, a long time ago, if you can't get the .com, try the name with a hyphen, or serious of hyphens. so for example you can't get domainname.com try domain-name.com

However, in my experience placing even one hyphen seriously reduces the effectiveness of the domain name and can look a little spammy to people. Plus they can think, that you've had to put a hyphen in there so you obviously weren't the first and therefore not as authoritative. At least that's the feedback I've had and I agree.

Of course buying several extension is better .. but it's not good for our pocket .. :D . You can consider buying several extension if you think you will build big business on that domain. Just say you will build online store, or you build mega site like google :D (check google.net). This is for protection purpose. That maybe some one stealth your success story on your domain (say .com) using .net or else. But if you build middle class business or purpose, it think it's not so important to buy several extension. Imagine if you want to build 10 site, so you have backup with how many domains? this is not good for pocket.

Yes .. .com is the king .. but there's no mistake if you buy .net .biz or else if this domain name does't harm other trade mark. just a lot of great site build on non .com base .. but .net or .info or .org , or else basis. Actually each extension has it's own fuction, but we always prefer use .com because of its popularity .. just say if you want to build anti aids campaign site, you can consider xxxxxx.org ... because .com is primary for commercial purpose.
