Can paid links harm your site ?

"If a site owner has a personal relationship with another unrelated site in a different niche and adds a link to their site from his, this link looks a LOT like a paid link. Since paid links can harm your site, what is best practice in this situation?" :)

Don't sell or buy links that pass ranking weight or PR. It's that simple.

I am doing SEO projects for Clients in Australia,One of my concerns were what if the client walked away after i did the on-page activities for SEO......i thought like it would be better to have a blog And bring the blog to Say PR 3 which is possible ..and then provide a link to the Customers site ..so that if the client walks away and if i remove his link from my blog then...that should effect the site rankings

Define what you mean by "walk away" -- but choose your words carefully.

Ah. Then what you're thinking of doing is unethical. I'd sic a collection agency on them at that point. And then if they don't pay up, drag them into small claims court.

Ah, but we're still service providers -- in other words businessmen (and women). We need to act as such. "Nothing personal Charlie, but business is business."

No personally its frustrating.......Client agrees with you on a 12 month plan ....we execute the plan of action to promote the business ......... and when we are almost there one day Client informs......"we have moved on"...

Okay. There may be a HUGE difference in what we're talking about then. Are they informing you that they'll be moving on once the contract has been fulfilled? If so, then they're within their rights to do so (you both met your respective terms of the agreement), and if you mess with their rankings by removing the links, they can (and likey will) sue you -- for a LOT of money.

If they're say "10 months" in the 12 month contract and they say "we're done on Friday" ask them why, and see if there's any way you can get them to reconsider. Then look at your contract and see what the escape clauses say.

Google is focusing on more valuable content rich sites. They don't want sites that people will stay on for 10 seconds, (sticky rate ). You will go much farther be avoiding the one irrelevanat link and focusing on genuine content that people will want to read about.

zeefu21 , Never ever do like what you have mentioned above. That kind of act will spoil the reputation of complete SEO community. Always think positively.
