I was just wondering, I have started building a few sites in 900 pixels wide, What screen size do you use, I personally use 1024 x 1280 How many people still use 800 x 600 when they surf the web......
1600x1200. I don't understand how people can use 1024x768 still. I moved away from that like 12 years ago. Can't work in such a low resolution. On my websites between 10 and 13% still use 800x600. Around 55% use 1024x768.
I think 1024 x 728 much more prevalent but also know vision problems of older users and hand me down equipement often results in users running 800 x 600.
You will find that most internet users have 17" monitors and at 1024x768 they can still read. Along with many can't adjust it beyond that or even know how. I have seen people who weren't even using the whole monitor screen because they didn't know how to adjust the screen to maximize. Then when I change their setting to higher resolutions it is too small for them to see.
I think we have two different issues here the resolution we are personally running on our computer and the screen size we use on the websites we build.
Ya, I was kinda wondering what everyone though the average " web surfer " used .. Also , Do most new pc's come with the default setting larger than 800 x 600?
My new portable came set up with the resolution 1200ish wide. I keep loads of windows open at once and rather like web pages at 800 x 600. That way I can easily jump back and forth between two windows. If my eyesight were better would have it 1600 by 1200.
800*600 make it for more than 15% of my visitors, that why I keep all my sites 800*600 friendly. (I can't afford to loose 15% of my trafic) Personnaly I use 1280*1024, but with many windows open at a time, Firefox is often resized in 800*600. I guess most DP members use wise screen, but quite many people who don't spend hours on the web still use low resolutions for eyes comfort (well, my parents do...)
depends very much on your topic. older people like it 800x600 because its better to read longer texts, but if you have a website for photoshop, dtp, raytracing or another techie topic you can go for 1024 and even higher. but keep in mind that the browsers viewport is always smaller than this, so on a 800x600 resolution you have maybe only 780x400 px left (scrollbar right and browserbars, bookmarks and other toolbars on top or bottom).
