if i have an old domain name which hasnt been used for some time, then place a perm 301 to redirect to another domain which is up and running would the link juice (backlinks) from the old domain be passed to the new domain. re: any new backlinks I make, using the old domain will google award the backlink to the redirected domain? cheers
Currently 301 passes part of the pagerank and the anchor text. But this is not sure that will happen for ever. Check out this video of matt cutts. I am a little bit worried from the way he explains it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70LR8H8pn1M
Yes.. bbriniotis is right. You should slowly consider moving all your links over. No immediate rush, however it may be time to consider doing a few at a time.
I would not worry about this at all as long as the old domain whose URLs are being redirected has belonged to you and you had a site up at that domain for a good while before the redirects were in place. What I get from what Matt says in this video is that IF you buy a domain with inbound links from someone else and 301 redirect it to your main domain, buy another domain with inbound links and 301 redirect it to your main domain, etc. that this is something they can catch (possibly through an automated method during indexing, but SURELY through a manual review using their tools). What he is eluding to is that Google reserves the right to devalue or not count inbound links (for PR or Link Text) that your domain has accumulated as the result of buying other domains with inbound links and 301 redirecting them to your main domain. However, if you have had another domain for a while where you have had a site, that site has accumulated inbound links, and you simply throw up 301 redirects sending requests to another domain that you also own, there is really nothing to worry about here. In fact Matt will tell you that this is perfectly ok. It is the preferred and suggested method of shutting down an old site and sending those users to your new site (assuming the new site has a similar theme). This is good for users who are clicking on links to your old site and not in any way blackhat or deserving of a penalty or discounting of links.
