American immigration officials denied that the actor had been formally held, but Indians condemned what they called "humiliating" treatment given to Khan, a Muslim who is well-loved in a largely Hindu country. One Cabinet minister suggested a "tit-for-tat" policy toward Americans travelling to India.

Angry fans in the northern city of Allahabad shouted anti-US slogans and burned an American flag.

Khan said he was detained on Friday by US immigration officials at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey because his name came up on a computer alert list.

The actor is in the US to promote "My Name is Khan", a new film about racial profiling of Muslims after the Sept 11, 2001, attacks.

The story was front-page news in India, where the ability to avoid being frisked at airports is seen as a status symbol. Politicians, sports celebrities and film stars often claim VIP status to avoid security checks.

"My name is Khan? Too bad. SRK (Shah Rukh Khan) feels the heat of American paranoia," said The Times of India, quoting Khan as saying he felt "angry and humiliated".

Khan later downplayed the incident. "I think it's a procedure that needs to be followed, but an unfortunate procedure," he told reporters on Saturday in suburban Chicago.

US customs officials told The Associated Press that Khan was questioned as part of a routine process that took 66 minutes. Elmer Camacho, a customs spokesman, said Khan was not detained, "but it took a little longer because his bag was lost by the airline".

"Shocking, disturbing n downright disgraceful. It's such behaviour that fuels hatred and racism. SRK's a world figure for God's sake. Get real!" Priyanka Chopra, a Bollywood actress, wrote on Twitter.

Ambika Soni, the federal information minister, angrily suggested that India adopt a similar policy toward Americans traveling to India.

In the Indian capital, New Delhi, a small group of photo-waving fans shouted slogans in support of Khan.

Khan, 44, has appeared in more than 70 films, and has consistently topped popularity rankings in India for the past several years.

There's no need to really sympathize with Shahrukh Khan only because he's a celebrity. This is the plight of many travelers who follow Islam or have a typical sounding name.

Yes you are right but this issue can be heard when such things happen to celebs if it happens to normal person no one would care but now that it has happened to a famous celeb we know what happens and how US acts with south asians . If we Indians do such things to americans wonder how they would react

Though United States is probably correct in frisking away Shah rukh for a asking questions, but there has to be a limit. Things are just getting out of hand. Americans in the past had done this to Mr Chidambaram and other Indian diplomats.

I think we should stop complaining about VIP issues and start interrogating every foreign delegates who come down to India. That's how things will be brought in the even. As far as Mr Kalam was treated, it's unfortunate that it has to happen here in India.
