Word Docs on Site

I have two word docs on my site - they are on the third tier - but would the googlebot not like this, and when they hit the docs - just go somewhere else since there isn't a link back to the second or first tier on the word docs?

You can figure this out yourself...

First check to see if Google even has the URLs for the Word docs indexed by searching Google for site:URLofWordDoc like

If the pages are indexed then open one of the Word docs that is indexed... highlight a unique sentence from the doc that you feel wouldn't exist somewhere else on the web... copy the sentence. Go to Google and search for the sentence in quotes. Does your URL show up in the results? If you get lots of results and you want to narrow it down to only yours then search for something like:

    What do you see?

Have you searched for one? Last I knew there were several.

I would, however, suggest that you convert to HTML with an option to download a pdf - and then only if the layout (read "print version") is important. It is seldom that I have found word or pdf files to be necessary. In fact, the only exception I can think of is a site I did that had some "official" forms to be completed and sent in via snail mail. In that case it made sense to have a downloadable file.
