But they never guaranteed that the submission would stay for ever. Did they?

Ask yourself this, would you like your links removed? I would say no. Therefore I wouldn't do it to others. You have to respect the people who submit to your directory because they are your customers and the ones who will eventually come back for paid links. If you treat them right that is. People that use shady methods like deleting free links are really just shooting themselves in the foot.

Those of you who have come to know me to a degree through dealings in this forum know well that I submit my sites to many free directories that are just beginning & posted here, but in addition to free submissions I spend generously by frequently buying featured listings as well. I just finished paying $69.00 for a regular listing in one directory for example...

While it is certainly a directory owner's choice to keep free listings forever or to delete them, I for one will never be able to feel that a person who does that is honorable or trustworthy, and I will not bother to submit my sites for free and will certainly never pay for a listing of any type in any directory- or business of any sort- such a person is associated with.

Think of it this way-- people who submit their sites take time to do a good submission. Those good sites they submit help give useful content to the directory (at no charge) which in turn facilitates the directory achieving page rank and gives rise in turn to favorable search result positioning.

So, in essense a free submission to start a new directory out is a win - win for both parties.

Dumping the free listings (content) when switching to paid is not only foolish for SEO purposes but it makes a lie out of the original intent of accepting the free listings and robs those who submitted of the value of their time & effort.

That's my two cents at any rate.

    Enough already!

I think a fair range of opinions have been expressed.

The directory owner sees no problem

    The rest of us do.
