Hypothetical speaking. Could your business survive if for some reason the internet would go down. Or could you pick right up on another physical trade to survive if the internet would go down.

I guess my current business would pretty much go down, but I will always survive.

I'd be pretty much screwed. I've invested over 80% of my life in working on computers/internet.

I always wonder how I would react to a world without computers, technology. Guess we'd just have to start all over.

Yes. I learned long ago (though some bad experiences) to be well diversified. As they say, never put all your eggs in one basket! The internet is a large part of my business, but I could take it all offline if I had to. I'd have to refocus a bit, but I believe I could still be successful without the internet.

This is my motto too, never put all your eggs in one basket. You never know what may happen to one part of your business. You may not have enough capital to own a few different businesses but you should at least try investing some cash in stocks, bonds, or private companies in case the business that you own/run goes belly up.

hmmmm I know I'm the newbie here but this is were I disagree with you. If you have enough capital to where you can invest into something I sure wouldn't go into stocks, bonds or private companies.

Go with something that is proven and has been around longer then any of today's companies which is .................

    Gold

    or

    Silver

And do not purchase certificates. Get a hold of a dealer and buy the actual physical product and don't store that in a bank.

I know side subject but had to throw my two cents into it.

If the internet was to go down, a lot of people lives would be affected. I make ALL of my income from the internet, so I'll be pretty much screwed along with a sizeable chunk of people.

If some drastic happened and we went back to feudal living, I think self-employed and resourceful people such as those found running websites would do very well.

People who have spent their entire adult lives on auto pilot in stable jobs however, would not.

Yes coz my business is only 1% dependable on internet.
So its would effect much of my company revenue.

My business is almost 100% internet based, but the internet is not going anywhere soon unless people get sick of easy access information, quick news, sociability and tons of free p.o.r.n

    Aint happening

My Internet company would not survive. Let's agree to never imagine a world without cell phones or the Internet; that would be devastating.

Probably not that screwed. The same mental gearing that helps you solve tricky computer problems also helps you solve tricky engineering problems in other realms. Breaking a problem down, identifying cause and effect, building dependency maps, and so on.

Then again, I think the only plausible scenario in which there is no internet (or something like it) is one in which the physical laws of our universe have changed, so maybe engineering won't be the same either.

    This is a great topic...
I am trying to remember the days before the Internet and back then, I was STILL involved with computers doing hardware sales and support.
So, I really can't imagine utilizing many of my skills without an Internet.
I DO have PR, marketing, part planning / hosting / promotions and even character acting to fall back on.
However, even most of those depend somewhat on the availability of having the Internet as a tool to distribute the "product"
Just thinking of a new world w/o the Net is a very very scary thought right now.
