Last night someone tried to break into my home and I'm scared to death. What would you recommend doing if it were to happen again? Know of anything that might scare burglars away? Sorry for this very off-topic post but I don't think I'll ever be able to sleep unless I know what to do.

are you allowed to have a dog? preferably a large one.

are you allowed to own a firearm? shotguns are good for home defense.

Clearly from a military standpoint you simply have cameras and motion detectors outside of your home, and you will be notified when a burglar is arriving. You get on the roof of your home and use the RPG against the burglar: outside.

    Simple tactics.

Thanks for all the tips :)

I have a large dog but he has serious fear issues so he's of absolutely no use when it comes to burglars.
Not allowed to keep a firearm, not even allowed to properly defend myself.. if I were to hurt a burglar I'd end up being the criminal. Stupid Dutch laws...

I really like the fake camera idea and motion detectors, will check if those are for sale tomorrow. Had no idea what RPG's were till I just Googled them, can't picture myself ever using those but thanks. :D

When a burglar is already inside your home would it be best to confront them or keep as quiet as possible?

i live in the US. in my state, if someone breaks into your home to steal or do harm, you may use deadly force.
motion detectors attached to a loud alarm and bright flashing lights is a good idea.

also a barking dog is a good deterrent, the bad guy won't know if the bark is worse then the bite.

don't ever confront a home breaker unless your prepared to defend yourself.

leave your tv on if you have a timer set it so it turns on and off. i would never try and confront some one in my house and im male if your female they may rape and so forth id say the risk is more if your female.

if some one is stealing they are doing it for a reason they might be high on drugs or anything so its best to keep away so my answer to your question is i would run once outside i would yell fire and help! On a 2nd note one thing that gets me is some people say "i would kill them" but could you live with killing some one? i couldnt.

best advice i can give is alarm thats on show and motion detectors but for now leave your tv on.

I have installed alarms, just the cheap ones that ring loudly once it detects something moving. Then I have fake dome shape camera's with a flashing red light. Its pretty efficient in my opinion.

Install motion detectors and proper lighting if you have a privacy fence.

Keep a light outside your door or in the kitchen, that way, the burglars would think someone might still be awake. Teach your dog to at least bark at strangers so you know when someone you do not know is near your house. Have at least have a baseball bat with you in the bedroom or somewhere you can reach out easily. Plus, always be ready to call the police (use a speed dial if possible) keep you phone always at your reach.

Don't panic.!. Check all the doors and windows before going to bed. Make sure your phone is reachable,
    dial 911 quick.

Nora I as in the same situation you were in once. But i didnt even know that someone was trying to rob me, I just got up to get a cup of water in the middle of the night and thats when i saw a stranger in my kitchen. When he saw me he just jumped out from the window he came from. In my opinion it would be better t o confront them if you cant own a firearm then get a baseball bat :).

    Get some of these: [IMG]

But make sure you get an electrician to rewire the sensors so they are somewhere around the light and not under it, because the robber will know its the motion detector thats turning the light on.
