Do create more back links and be patient. This type fluctuation is so normal. Use your keywords as anchor text while creating back links.

Yes, increasing backlinks is important plus also look into what changes you did in on-page that could have affected the rankings.

When you are in thinking about SEO for your site it should be never ending phenomena to increase your back links in continuous growth and we shouldn't stop untill you decided to stop your website. Because now-a-days competition is bit high compared to past and many people are came to know the secrets of SEO. So, try to build more links and this should be continuous process.

Ranking drop can be normal due to Google Dance and SERP updates. But it can also the direct result of:
    • Bad neighbourhood links
    • Internal URL structure changes of your web page
    • Participation in auto surf or auto hit activities
    • Drop in your page rank strength of web page

You should monitor and certainly not stop doig quality link building

    Cheers !!

I think this happens all the time for competitive google SERPS and your niche is very competitive I would assume. Just think, you are in competition with 9 other websites if you are the first page. Add in any newcomers to the market and you have quite a few people watching the same keyword as you.

I have the same problem with a few niches of mine and I analyze my competition's backlinks and then see if I can use some of their's while adding a few unique of my own. After a couple of days, I get back to the top. Then the process circles around again.

Just keep working on it. I wouldn't recommend any major changes until the google dance stabilizes a bit. If your still not doing well in a month or so, then maybe consider changing your site layout, keywords, density, content, title, H1, etc...... If you do too many changes, too fast, then it will be impossible to know what works.

The best bet, is to just keep building good content and making a great site.

Check anyone's site that gives you a suggestion and see how they are ranking. I often see people with SEO sites giving advice and their sites have a 4,000,000 Alexa ranking or worse. The lower the number being better with Alexa. If they have a fairly good standing in a competitive niche then they are probably giving good advice.

You have taken on a very large niche. This means your top competition has money to burn on SEO. You have to out think and outwork them. See what they are doing, who is linking to them, on site optimization, and so on. To gain top in such a large niche it also takes time. Sometimes it can take years to climb the ladder. But if you persist and do not give up you can do it. As your site ages and you continually build content and backlinks your SERPs will become more stable.
On a very large niche you are looking for the long term benefits while using "long tail keyword phrases" to cover the immediate need.
