By link building do people mean go into Really popular websites which are similar to yours and spamming your own website all over their forums?

Sorry for being so ignorant , Help would be good.

- First things first. Pick ten pages from your site and make a list of twenty or so anchor texts to be used in your link-building. Use a mixture of URLs (the URL of your homepage and sub pages), key words (key words that people are using to search in your niche) and branded terms (the name of your site).

Link building is just the process of getting as many sites as possible to link to your site. You want the other sites to link to your site using terms that you choose like: "whatever forum" or "niche forum" or whatever terms you are trying to rank your site in the search engines for.

Say you have a health forum. The more sites you have linking to your site using the term "Health Forum" then the more likely Google is to put you at the top of the search engine results.

The html for that link would be: Health Forum

Think of it as each site that links to you is a vote for your site to the search engines.

Does that make a little more sense?

link building is building backlinks for your site. how you do it is up to yo. some people resort to spamming and others build links ethical ways. there are plenty of ways to build links without spamming forums or blogs. forum links however dont worth much. try to build relevant contextual backlinks as much as you can. analyze your competition who rank on the top and see where they get their backlinks from. if it works for them, then it wil lwork for you also. try to get as many links as possibe from the same or similar sources your competitors are getting their links from which is a good start for starters. over time you will figure out yourself and will be able to put togethe a link building campaign

When you do link building = backlinks = good foundation of your site(PR)= traffic

I hope it might answer all your question about link building ;)

Most are doing spamming but that is not allowed. Their reputation will turn out into negative way.

A good example is us putting our links in our footers here. This builds links back to us.
It is best to do this in forums that are of the same niche. You can also do 1,000 other things such as write articles and submit them, directory submitting, start a facebook and other SN sites with links to your site. I use Google's blogs to tactfully promote my site also.
The main thing is to have quality content to make others want to link to you.

Good Luck!

By linking into a quality website to the others, you have to make sure that you are linking to a relevant site from yours. But there are steps that you become a spam as a you link. And that is the example the above list. Try to link with a quality site..

Link building is about getting other websites to link to YOUR website, with your keyword in the anchor text.

Example of a bad link: your site
Example of a good link: your keyword

The keyword phrase you want to rank for should be the anchor text. The more links you have coming from other websites (preferably related to your niche) with your KEYWORD as the anchor text, the higher you will rank for that keyword.

A good example is Peter Drews website, "bruteforcesocialmedia.com"

The Title of his website is, "Brute Force Power Twitter Marketing Software" so what keywords is he trying to target?

Brute Force
Power Twitter
Power Twitter Marketing
Twitter Marketing
Twitter Marketing Software
Marketing Software

See how all of these keywords are targeted at the same time?

So what does he need to do to rank for those keywords? He needs to get lots of backlinks which have "Power Twitter" as the anchor text to rank for Power Twitter. He needs to have a bunch of backlinks with "Twitter Marketing" as the anchor text. He needs a bunch of backlinks with "Marketing Software" to rank for Marketing Software. The more competitive the search term, the more backlinks with anchor text you will need.

It makes sense to structure your "Link Building Campaign" like Peter Drew's, because by trying to rank for "Twitter Marketing Software" his site is getting two benefits. One, it helps rank for the term "Twitter Marketing Software" and two, it helps rank for "Twitter Marketing" which is probably a more difficult term to rank for. Find terms like these where you can hit two birds with one stone. Start with anchor text links for the long-tail keyword, then once you rank there, use anchor text for the main keyword.

Link building is often defined as practise of getting links from other sites to your own site.
Search Engines give more importance to websites that have more inbound links and therefore rank those sites higher in their search results.
From past many years webmasters have actively involved in various link building activities to get top rankings in search engines.

Getting inbound links (links from other websites) not just help you in achieving top rankings but also increases your site traffic and popularity.

Never ever spam. Link building is very large: directory submissions, article marketing, blog reviews, social bookmarking, press releases, RSS feed submissions are all good ways to build links to your website.

Spamming always make your site go down in search engines... And make sure to get a higher page rank you need to exchange links with higher page rank sites..

Avoid building links from sites that are not relevant for your niche as these will potentially do more damage than good.

They dont do any damage, they are just pointless! I've been used to get some so called "natural" links from some idiotic adult sites(obviously from competitors) they did not helm 'em :p
Still do not spend money for these!

As someone above said, the link building technics vary a lot - its up to you to choose.
Roam around DP for long enough and I am sure you will find almost all the info you need regarding that. The rest is up to you, plus some creativity, hard work and interesting niche :)

However, as a start try some Press Releases and article submissions...last of which are good for deep linking.

build links by doing the following:

social bookmarking
forum postings (through signature)
directory submission (addurl.nu is a sample web directory)
classified ads postings
blog commenting (use your keyword as your name, but you need to stay/comment on what the blog is all about)
Article Submission
