It's important to not focus too much on optimizing for Search Engines and Spiders. Instead, by optimizing right for actual Human Visitors you will in turn be optimizing for the Spiders. The most important thing to have is unique content that visitors actually want to read. If they like it they are more apt to provide a link to your site or that individual content, in turn those links show the Search Engines that your Site is valued.

Well, for starters, how good are your writing skills? How well do you know semantic structural HTML? Have you studied information architecture at all?

Before I start, let me just say that most of the people that have posted replies are right, there is simply too much information to divulge in a single forum post and to learn it ALL is next to impossible, but there are plenty of places on the web where you'll find enough information to get you on your way, but I'll try and get through as many of the key points as I can now.

There are supposed to be over 100 things on a page that Google looks at to determine what search term/keywords to rank you for (these search terms/keywords should match the link text of your backlinks) but that's pretty much all on-page seo achieves, letting spiders know what search term to rank you for. No amount of on page seo will get you ranked higher, other than perhaps unique, keyword rich content, which is a must have if you hope to get a site anywhere.

If you want to make the pages of your site easily readable to search engine spiders so that they know exactly what to rank you for, then the basics are as follows:

Use your desired kewords as your page title, and then create a footer that reads exactly the same. This means that the first AND last words a spider sees on your page are your desired keywords, so it already has a pretty good idea of what that page is about.

Try to use your keywords in your page headings (h1, h2 etc.) and have a hierarchical structure of your headings, ie. try not to put any h1s after an h4 etc.

Make the alt text behind your images your desired keywords (the same as the title and footer)

Make your description and keyword META tags the same as your page title and footer as well. META tags do not hold as much sway as they used to, but they are still worth using. Anything the spiders can use to derive what your page is about is a plus.

And finally, write some UNIQUE content for each page and make it keyword rich, (repeat the keyword(s) at least once for every 150 words) but don't overdo it, you don't want to get penalised for keyword spamming/stuffing/whatever you want to call it.

That's pretty much the basics of on-page seo, but like I said at the start, this won't necessarily help where you're ranked, but it gives the search engines a clear initial insight as to what your page is about, and what keywords to rank it for. It may give you a slight advantage if you concentrate on one keyword per page as this will inform the search engines that your page is dedicated to one topic only and therefore (in the search engine's mind) is more qualified to give information on that topic than a page that may not be optimised well and that a search engine can't derive one particular topic from. Other than that, high rankings are pretty much solely down to high quality back links, and lots of them.

The first thing to establish with any on site optimization is that content is kind... make your site have original and on point content and your pretty much golden besides a few small other adjustments.

    Hi,

Seo has 2 techniques one is On page Seo and second one is off page seo .Keyword analze, keyword selection, quality of content, preparation of meta these work is basically come under On page seo.You have to select which keyword is appropirate for your website for this selection you can use google adwords toolbar here you can get idea which keyword has how many competition according to this you can select a keyword, don't use general or highly competitve keyword.Keyword must be relevent to your website, this keyword must be come under description, meta of website except these check whatever content your using is it unique or not in short means all the work which is done within website design and unique content is called On page optimization.

Diego, that was a pretty good post. But I do need to correct something - you don't need the first and last things the search engine spider sees to be the same.
