    Guys,
Y'day I got 25000 uniques on one of my sites. Hostgator disabled my site saying CPU usage is more than 25%. Presently I have Baby plan of the hostgator shared hosting. this is the maximum traffic I got so far. What do you advise me to buy?
    A VPS
    OR
    A Dedicated Server
And from which PRESTIGIOUS company? Should I buy from HostGator? Pls. advise. Thanks in advance.

I'd say a dedicated server would give you 100% assurance that you won't wake up one day with your VPS suspended due to hugging all the CPU... many VPS providers do that...

HG servers are very good cos they are fully managed and HG server management is very good... but if you are capable to fully manage your server then there is no point in buying from HG... you will need to look for unmanaged servers.

What's your monthly budget for the dedicated server?

Go for dedicated box. If you're not much with linux server administration, go for managed servers - Rackspace & The Planet are good options.

What's your budget? Location preference? cPanel? Do you need it to be managed?

    Thanks guys,
I have kept the budget at HostGator standard which is $219. I am hoping 4GB RAM shall be sufficient for the CPU usage I need.

Anything with more then 4GB of ram, and a quad core, would be MORE then sufficient :).

You could even resell the extra space to your friends.

Def dedicated, if you got a VPS you'd use wat to much BW and CPU and they would limit you, and your site would crap up. Get a dedi.

    I would recommend dedicated.
A quad core is always better and you can get a quadcore for your budget, just take a look at WHT. And when you are able to get 8GB of RAM, I would go for it. Because when your website keeps growing it is most likely that also your database will grow or your web servers need more memory.

    Hi,

I would not recommend a dedicated server. You were fine so far with shared hosting until your website spiked in traffic. There is no need for a dedicated box, because a VPS could hold you just fine. You will just be wasting money with a dedicated server. You can probably get a managed VPS with 1-2 GB ram and 3-4 GB ram burst with cpanel for about 100 bucks. Search around before you buy dont waste your money.

When you have a serious website, it can take to many resources resulting in a disabled VPS. I would still recommend a dedicated server, a VPS is only a good option when you have serveral servers, else you can create a VPS node from your server which allows you to have multiple VPSes without the risk of getting a disabled VPS.

To begin with and as per your current load - you can do well with a VPS and it doesn't cost much. If you notice that the traffic spikes further you may consider dedicated.

Current needs can be met with VPS - at very affordable costs.

Whats the matter with you? VPS is suppose to be meant for ease of access. Root access at very low price. Run your personal blog or mail server on it.

Not meant to run a site like the one the OP has.

Your question is way too vague. What you really need to know is what your total transfer needs are, as well as the type of application you will be running.

I'd imagine just moving up from the "Baby" to a higher end plan to start would be the way to go. The "baby" is just that... Its really mean to hosting something like, "me and my little few page web site"... Not a full blown ecommerce store, or database intensive application, much less a very busy site or forum.

I would have thought your provider would have first suggested moving you to a larger plan before suspending the site.
