I think it's more of a preference to you then what might be better then the other. I mean you can do some great things with both operating systems. Again, it all depends on what you're planning on doing with them.
It depends. If your applications require PHP and MySQL only then you can go for Linux server. But if you are using Microsoft technologies then you will have to go for Windows server. Kailash
It also depends which programming language do you wish to use for developing your web application? ASP, ASP.NET will only work with Windows server.
Linux with lighttpd is the best combination for performance. Apache is good for compatibility as most scripts use that as the base.
lighttpd will only perform better if you're running a single site on an entire server. Once you start adding multiple instances / accounts, it's performance tarnishes.
I think you're confused, Litespeed and lighttpd are two completely different pieces of software. On this note, you don't really want to compare the two because litespeed is attempting to mimic apache and as you will probably read form 99% of it's "Past" clientel, they liked it, but it just can't compare to either apache or lighttpd. Apache is way more feature rich, and lighttpd handles requests much better then both (not to mention the minimal server load). Really it does depend on what you're going to be using the server for. My opinion: lighttpd (if you're running a single site) apache litespeed that's the best to least best scenario list.
Hi, That dependence for what you want use server and how much money you have. If you don't have to much money than you need to use Linux, and if you have lot of money then Windows Server. Windows Server is little bit easier configure like Linux. In Windows Server you can use wizard's to configure server. In Linux you need manual download a file, compile a file, manual configure application. If you have just windows client in your network than better choose to install Windows Server for Active Directory, File Server, DHCP, Exchange Server. For firewall application is definitely minimum Linux operating system or better OpenBSD or OpenSolaris. For web application you can use I think booth. But one think for security reason for internet application Linux is better chose than windows Server or if you want better security you need use FreeBSD or OpenSolaris. FreeBSD and OpenSolaris both is unix operating system and you can download and use for free. If you familiar with Linux operating system than not to hard learning OpenBSD or OpenSolaris because Linux is actual designed from unix system. One think I can recommended you need to design your system first. You need to go though what you need and what technology you want to use. And after that you can decide which operating system you want to use. Rudolf
There is a free version of litespeed - definitely recommended over Apache. This license isn't for multiple domains though. As for Windows or Linux - simply depends on what you want to do then you go from there. Either operating system will do what you need / want it to do.
Dude i know that they are diffrent lol ive used all 3 ... lighttpd is good but its somewhat complex though i used it with lxadmin. Working with litespeed was easy i mean it gives less server load , apache if not properly tuned screws the server big time
Litespeed I agree is best for static websites. But when you start throwing php among other additional dynamic variables into the equation, it flops.
Linux is much cost-effective but if you don't need microsoft-specific technologies like .net, asp, etc... The most powerful linux solution for web hosting is nginx web-server as frontend
