changes and updates in google

    Hey,

Following the recent changes and updates in google i was wondering how it has effected everyones position in serps?

I had quite an interesting chat the other day with a lady who heads up the web division of a very very large uk company (nationwide) ... being a little nerdy i was chatting away about googles updates and she said that google was now giving weight to the large brands rather then just well optermized sites. She said that if you have a large brand that has been trading offline for years but hasn't targeted online seo (not including ppc) that the large brand would now rank much higher in seo then a smaller unknown web site that has put lots of effort into seo onpage and offpage?
Meaning that it will be one rule for a normal web site who has to go and seo on there sites and another rule for the large brand who wont need to do this?

I told her that i didnt beleive they would do that as it would become the death of there serp but she said that the contacts she has at google have made this clear that this is the way forward ....

what does everyone think on that?

I have looked in my industry and she is right to a point ... we now have a massive 'offline' brand is not at the top for a massive term and have only just got there ... im not saying they are only offline , of course they advertise online but i have never noticed them to do much on the seo front?

So this means either 'she is right - large brands will now outrank smaller brands without doing anything more' or that 'the large brand company i have noticed ranking well has stared to take seo seriously' ????

In my opinion this is the truth, i remember that someone told me about offline makerting - also is important! It had happened long time ago that Google really gave weight to the large brands.

Not true. Brand offline is not included as a major element in the algorithm. In certain aspects when its a tie or to decrease spam then there is a slight possibility though.

Do you have any sources to back this claim up? Or are you just pulling this out of your ass?

If the so-called large brand has its exist online for a long time and earned good reputation, a good PR, this thing might happened. :)

so if brands are making a massive boost to serp's how are they deciding what are the top brands?
unless its a human manual process that some bods are sitting in google office and saying well thats a big brand but that isn't?

there must be a automatic way for google to tell what are the big brands/companies? maybe by your ppc budget? just a thought ...

I have heard the same but not sure if its true. In the future only the big players will dominate no matter how many backlinks or what kind of seo the have done. Since the big G know they are serious companies they will give them more trust since they are to be trusted. I guess that makes sense but to use smallplayers I guess I have to look for a dayjob now?

Either create one big brand and put all efforts into that or you are doomed. Myself I have a lot of smaller pages and i think it will be difficult to survive in the future doing this.

I was mostly commenting on your bold statement (not opinion) that brand awareness is not factored into the google algorithim....unless you work for google, you would not know for sure that brand awareness was not included in the algorithim, and therefore should only speculate on its existence.

And yes, I can be a jerk when I get worked up!

When it comes to the matter of Trustrank in Google and how websites are given the placements, a lot of discussions can be initiated concerning the brands or business trademarks values.

It will be interesting to see how Google handles this, my vote is for the little guy, give him a chance - otherwise Google becomes Microsoft all over again.

    totally agree with findonline!

so what do we think me be viewed as credits towards making a web site classed as a 'BIG brand'?
I think it could be linked in with google ads .... if you have a large ppc budget then they give you extra weight in the serps as they think big brands = big marketing budgets ???

    any others ....
