two things you get if you submit your article..

any one reading your article would reach your site ..

if your article is being read at a large scale and human visitors come to it.. Google would give your site a page rank and trust will be pass by that artilcle site to your site...and chances are google would itself love to promot your site by google search results...

if you have the same article on your site and on the article sites, it will be considered as duplicate content. google will keep the original article source indexed and will remove the duplicate pages form indexing. so if your own site had the article to begin with and given that your article page was indexed first by google, you will be identified as the original article source and there will be no penalty for your site. how much seo benefit you will get depends on how many directories and what type of directories you submit to, but if you submit to some good directories, you can get some traffic to your site which is an added bonus.

If you want to benefit by submitting articles to article directories, you should either submit original articles or make enough changes to existing articles so that they look almost unique. Otherwise, you would not benefit much as Google would not consider the article as original content and it won't get indexed. You might only get a few visitors (through the link in the resource box) that are browsing article directories.
