    or maybe in some cases, they are paid..

    Gives them a good feeling to making the site better and helping out. Kind of like volunteerism at a local church or soup kitchen.

    The moderator have resposibility to check whether the members in the site are following the rules or not.

    Forum moderator is just like a manager for a company. Some people just feel that they need/like to manage others.

    Some forums do pay their moderators but majority of them don't. Don't you think become a moderator is already priceless. They have the power with them.
