    You need to install Bind

type the following into the shell

    apt-get install bind

    or type

    aptitude

then search for it and install it. then edit the bind config files to point to a domain. It is a tricky thing as your best to install things like webserver (apache) first then do that

Of course you can use web tools such as cPanel, webmin, kloxo etc, which help you out with all that stuff manually, but I would not recommend playing arounda dn doing it manually, best to seek out some help (possible on IRC chat rooms) as it is a complicated thing to do, especially if you haven't done it before

Otherwise if you wanna do teh cheats way and if you only want to access the VPS with the domain, you can edit your hosts files to point the domain to the IP, but that will only work for you viewing it

    > apt-get install bind
    Reading package lists...
    Building dependency tree...
    Reading state information...
Package bind is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
    dnsutils bind9 manpages
E: Package bind has no installation candidate

Get a domain name and change the C-Name Record to your IP.

Correct if I'm wrong guys but, the content should just be @, but your domain should work the same way. Try it out, let us know if it fails.

What? You've got to have an A Record in place for the domain pointing to that IP.

    Here's an example zone file.

    @ IN NS ns1.your-nameserver.com
    @ IN NS ns2.your-nameserver.com
    @ IN A 213.229.67.221
    www IN CNAME @
    ftp IN CNAME @
    mail IN CNAME @
    @ IN MX 10 mail

This is only one part of it and assumes you are doing your own DNS.
You will also need to create a vhost (virtual host) for your web server software that points that name at the directory where you site will be located on the server.

So to recap you need to both map your IP to a domain name, then map that domain/IP to a directory locally.

Ahhh, did I say CName, A Record is what you need to edit. A Record, not CNAME.

It is a challenging thing to do if you dont have a control panel software and no knowledge fo how to do it manually. Best to look for a tutorial on google, try on cyberciti.biz and hopefully should help you out.

Otherwise you would prob be best to ask your VPS provider to install a control panel software like cpanel or something which will cost extra

See if the place where you registered your domain name provides free or cheap DNS, then you don't have to install anything, just set up A/CNAME records pointing to your IP address.
