Ok this is kind of a rant, but I need to get it off my chest. This is probably my first post on such a topic, but I've been reading the forums for a few weeks and I get the sense that there are alot of people that are interesting in getting a fast buck here, rather than building a good quality site that will develop over time to a point where, for example you could approach peers in your niche and offer them an advertising contract on your site. Most of these posts, not all, seem like they're created by kids fresh out of high school, thinking that this is the way to make money, and some will be successfull... for now. Until the game changes and they have no real transferable skills, other than placing adsense code on a site and fill a site full of articles with key words that are copied from other sites. What prompted me to write this? well when you see topics like: what kind of sites should i do? what's the highest paying word etc... It seems these people dont' have vision, they don't want to think outside the box. All they do is put all their eggs in one basket and mooch. What if click based advertsing dies and becomes "goal" based like google is mulling over, these people will no doubt be stuck with no money and no marketability. It's beyond me how people have such narrow views on how to make money on the net. Myself, I'm 30'ish, I've seen things change and in my time on the net, I've learned not to be so focused on one thing. I am attempting to market myself as a consultant, web designer and the likes. I'm building up on my written skills and working on my grammar. I'm also learning creative writing and copy writing. I just don't believe in keeping my assets in one place. Ian
Nice thread. When I joined DP I was one of those you mention here but no more. I'm developing my web site and I keep learning here on DP... What really interests me is marketing (on or off line) and I'm trying to advertise myself as marketing expert. Back at the subject, there are people who make a lot of money from their webs so kids see posts with success stories and they just want to make money, fast and that is not going to happen. p.l.u.r.
Yeah... Every one should make their site more efficient and visitor friendly. Then the traffic will come. After that, you can get the click you want. But, I don't condone any click fraud whatsover. No way man.
Certainly there a lot of people that see the web as a pot of gold, and when your contronted with people announcing 5 figure adsense earnings per month, (hey some even 50k or more) its only natural to think. "Id like a slice of that". It also makes a good percentage of people that having been working hard at this business for a while, pretty demoralised and dejected when they know there not earning anything approaching that, which is unfortunate. I sometimes wish people wouldnt talk about what they earn at all, but thats a bit of the british coming out in me...on my dads side What goes on behind the scenes isnt mentioned...like the long, long hours in front of the computer, the fact that most of the people earning that sort of money have been doing this well over a year, most a good few years. Others are IT professionals that do this as an extention of there day job as a sys admin or hosting provider etc. These are already highly skilled people earning top dollar, not you ordinary joe. But theres nothing to say you cant earn a few dollars here and there and build up a nice business for yourself. I agree with you, its important to look long term...in the long term is products and services. People concentrate too much on adsense and not enough on providing either a first class product or first class service. Something that they could probably earn a lot more money with, and something that actually builds a client base, a business. So personally why am I here? Well i dont think im going to become a millionaire, not even earn the same sort of money some of the top IT people earn, im just here to earn enough to have a future not involving retail and sales...which I cant stand anymore. I want to build my own business, on my own terms, working the hours I want to work...The flexibility is really want im after. If the grammers dodgy...im tired, gimme a break
Yeah... this internet income has been surfacing about 7 years ago. At that time, there are only affiliate site that give you a chance to earn income. BTW, at that time, there are only a few website on the internet.
You are right to some extent. But even if i develop sites that will develop over a period of time., I will still make quick sites that earns quick money., As you say, PPC may die within some years., But it is alive today!. why not make use of it?
I guess these made for adsense sites have left me jaded, and I've always been of the "build something that will last" mindset. To Nerz: the little brittish in you is right, I'd like to see everyone stop posting their "i make $X,000 a month" posts, but then I think DP would lose a lot of traffic. The reason I'm on DP is to get tips on becoming a freelancer and to establish myself as a well known name in my field when I decide to sell my services to the masses. I don't have delusions of grandeur, I don't think I'll ever make 22,000 a month... but IF I do, it will not be entirely from adsense. I just know that I'll do my darndest to make some money so that I can work for myself, and afford an accountant to take care of the taxes.
in my opinion, there exists no online- marketing experts. Traditional media, like news-paper and tv , is totally different story. It doesnt take away that the combination traditional media --> internet is a good marketing. (look alex tew, he got only big because the 2 way marketing)
I cannot share your opinion. It not matter how your site looks, visitors will not care about it. (ofcource extreme things like, many popups, 60 second flash intros / loading time will not work in your advantage)
They not need a slice, they should bake their own pie. I believe in the adsense scene, someone should create a site for users, eventually advertisers will come. like any biz, you have winners, loosers, golddiggers, one-day-rich dudes. Don't feel pitty (for someone else, or yourself) start the old "archiculture" biz again. Its nice to show your successfull. It's adrenaline. Showing off -is also a good online marketeer sorry, I can also not agree with this Either you are a buisinessman or not. Skilled coders, image makers, sys admin, are very good at their jobs, but they will never be really successfull cause they are no real businessmen's. yes, adsense is a big hoax. For advertiser and for page builder. And, incase your balloon blows, all your "air-imperium" goes with it. I also agree on your long-term view. products, and services. About products I want to say it more specific, electronic goods. Dont come with 100000000000's # site with ebooks and other crap. be unique! So, what is your goal? Without goals what is worth you life. You have habit of an russian, "earn today for tomorrow" I think with such additude, better work for a boss, in this case, you are ready at 5-o'clock, and the paycheck is posted the 31st every month
You also should work for a boss. Search back any history of a product, or service or hype. Be "first" and make $$$$$$. Be nr xxxxxxxxxx, and it cannot work. it works like this for 1000's of years. (there are always exeptions) be unique
yes, and if you where born that time, you would be saying the same only some people "have it" to make it, others will only fail.
how old are you, how old you want to become? The longest operating companies evolved over the time. Now not tell me about microsoft, look at companies of 60 + years it makes you feel a looser, or ? Bosses employ people like you. Reconcider working for a boss your a dreamer only.
Its very sportive, not seeing my comments as a personal attact. cause they are not! Bosses think of things, other poeple cannot come up with. I think asking about: what kind of sites should i do? what's the highest paying word etc... is not making you suitable to become, what you dream of. even if there exists a general "niche" that is making many bucks, you think others would like to share it with you into detail?
