I personally don't think that it matters much, if at all. It might count as an overall link, but it won't carry much weight because anyone can put a link on this forum after 10 posts. Just my opinion, though.

I would think it could not matter all that much.

    Yes, it does.
Not so much with your popularity, I think google only counts a few links to a particluar site fron each linking site.

But you can use these links to influence what keywords google thinks your site is about. If you add "great chinese car site" to your link text in your signature. You are likely to start showing up in the serps for that term.

Of cource it will take more than this to show for the highly competative terms, but it does help.

I've tested this on sites before and it does work. Especially with MSN

The good point with sig is for new site, it's make them very quickly crawled by engines usually.

There is one caveat. With a new site with no links it is going to be your signature that ranks and not the site itself in Google.

That's right, but it's a good way to start the crawl. Once it's done, you can remove the sig.

I've never really had that problem, normally I'm adding in directories, several forums, and if possible a press release or two. Normally the site picks up quick enough that removing the link from DP is not an issue. I use the dp link to help raise in the ranks for a particular Keyphrase

I don't think it matters to much either when it comes to serps, but DP does come up search results so if you really paid attention to the words you put in your post someone searching for the right keywords will see your post and maybe click your sig. I haven't put to much effort in trying to market via posting in forums with well thought out post, but i think if you really paid attaching to what your posting and the keywords in the body and expesialy the tittle you could have your post in the top of the serps for any keyword you want, or at least that's what I'm thinking.

I have just uploaded my new site (www.cheese-burger.net) today. Is adding a link in my signature a good way of getting my site crawled?

What other options do I have?

Ive already placed a link on the relevant wikipedia page.

DP gets crawled regularly so yes it will help. Any links pointing to your site that gets seen by the search engines will start the crawling process on your site. Your contect will determine how deep the search engines go into your site.

Although not much, but links in signature does helps in SERP especially in MSN (incoming links) and Google (relevancy in anchor text development).

It's good for getting indexed fast since DP forums is crawled on a daily basis. Plus you got about thirty visitsper month from curious people in the forums.

I can't say if the sig links help in SERPs. There are a number of factors that affect your SERP rankings.

About the 'I think google only counts a few links to a particluar site fron each linking site.', I'd like to mention that Google considers all links to a prticular site, from sigs etc. See this example of my cooking site backlinks on Google.

I have never done any link building for my cooking site, have only used in DP sigs, and Google is showing 69 backlinks, almost all of them coming from DP.

There also the added benefit of extra traffic you get from people reading the DP forum and clicking on links in your signature. Has anyone noticed a significant amount coming from DP in their log files?

It's only helpful to get u listed on Google - since uve got a PR 6 page link to you. BUT it doesnt help u gain rank - as u have not linked it with the keyword to your site. So its an alternative - when u dont have to wait few weeks after u submit ur url to google.

some dude who posts here says that he has a pr4 (can't remember the guy or the site - but I saw it about a month ago) and he says the ONLY marketing he every did was place his site's link in his sig and then just post. never tested it, but it's an interesting thought.
