the only way a banner is effective is if you disguise it enough that it doesn't look like a banner that's the only way.

Yes they are one of the most effective advertising medium, if not the most, there is. They have so many variables that they can be used anywhere and how, colours, size, sound, animation etc. They are to the point and grab attention. They are basically, text links. Think of how many text links you click, now imagine how many you would click if they werent all boring words but have colours etc.

Any ad works. They always have. They always will. You just have to know how to do it.

Yes, it works. Of course, banner ads are attractive in nature and converts good when placed in the right position with a Call-to-Action. I believe, banner ads are distracting when filled with contrast colors and blinking texts that annoys the visitor.

Don't throw your banner on any old website. Make sure their audience is an audience that would buy from you. For example, if I sell axes, it probably makes sense to advertise on a logging website of some kind. However, it doesn't make sense to advertise on a baby clothing ecommerce website. :)

Yes, banners work if it's done properly. BlackhatGuide v5.0 talks about this, and ways in which you can monetize banner ads and such. =]

Well, it depends. Having a crappy banner on acrrpay website is like having nothing. If you want a banner to be effective it has to be an outsatanding banner in an outstanding website.

Alright guys, if you want to talk about doing it the "correct way" or in the "correct method" why don't you enlighten us about what that is, exactly?

I think banners work because I've clicked on them before- but only if it was advertising something that caught my attention (OBVIOUSLY) because that is everyone's goal in marketing.

    Hi,
I think banners still work well. However, I will only click on banners at website I trust. For example, some popular blogs with high numbers of RSS Readers and I think I prefer to click those 125 by 125 banner on the right side of the blog such as those in http://www.problogger.net.

I think the catchy little banner ads make people curious- and curiosity leads to clicks!

Yes I think banners still work as long as you don't annoy your users with it. While most people skip them, consider the number of Internet newbies that could see you banner ads and hopefully click on them.
