    Yes
You can be profitable with 1 keyword (as long as it's the right one)

I always keep my personal campaigns small and geotargeted. I know what I know from my business and I harnass that data from my organic results then run my PPC in similar areas with similar keywords and it always works out. The problem with budgets is this...budgets are for losers. Example:

If you spend 1,000 and make 1,500....you don't need a budget, you need more thousands. Simple as that.

With that said, even if you found 1-5 keywords that had very high conversions then just pumped those up instead of trickling your PPC campaign, you will be much more successful.

Oh and in addition to that, if say, you had a niche where you might sell 1000's of products...dont bid on all the products or anything like that, just find the products that make you the most money and build your campaign around those...I would say pull 5-10 products out....then to go even further seperate your PPC campaign...
pull out your mobile ads, pull out your geotargeted ads, and then your national ads....track them all seperately and work from that data. PPC is a beast in itself and to run a successful campaign I would suggest you do some very in depth KW research (unless of course you have money to throw at the campaign....then you can figure it out that way)

For content network I start off with 3000-5000
For search - it all depends on the campaign, i'd either start with around 50 or less, or go big to 5000 or so

Yeah, I ran a campaign on Yahoo last October and I created my keyword list using Google's adword keyword tool. Then I took a look at the merchants site myself and came up with about 4-5 keywords on my own. Out of my entire campaign one keyword (one of the ones I thought of myself) was the most profitable it had a 300% ROI and brought in about $6K while all the other keywords just converted here and there.

yes, thats possible to get profit in few keywords, give it some time & determine its quality score. If it gives you high qs thats a good thing. And its better to start with few keywords just add some more as you go along with your account.

I also think it depends on a language, country you are targeting. I've tried all kinds of things with my campaigns, and I can tell that 10 English keywords are not nearly as profitable as, let's say, 10 Portuguese ones. In my case.

But I also realize it all depends on the niche and competition. But I think from a practical standpoint 50-100 good keywords will be better than 10. Just my opinion.

From my experiences only a small number of keywords actually convert and keep you profitable.

I never add more than 10 keywords per ad group.

Try the AdWords tool in my sig to help you out.

all depends on your level of product - i.e. I market products in over 60 different locations around the world - and currently have over 300,000 phrases
