let all be for real here ... i rank high for many keywords online ... my site rank on page 1 and MSN Yahoo too but really where the darn love..... so many obstacle are creating a ambush .........
again why is this so........ I mean meta key words contents.... layouts it is their but where the darn traffic ......... can anyone speak the truth in here ..... lol

 

To be honest i would say no, getting to number 1 in google alone is not. Anyone can get a brand name to #1, its the competitive, generic, high volume keywords that are difficult.

Getting to number 1 and driving qualified, relevant traffic that converts is a good measure of SEO abilities.

So, it depends what your ranking well for.

If you are ranking top in Google SERP then it definitely means your SEO is good. On the other hand, if you are not getting the traffic then it means your keyword selection is terribly wrong. Closely monitor the keywords you have utilized and get them changed ASAP.

 

Depends, if your keywords are good like money and finance then being in the top 3 is enough to prove your a good SEO. Being number 1 for useless keywords like "money is my honey bunny" is nothing.

 

It really depends on the keywords. I could probably be No1 tomorrow for some obscure term which nobody serches for, being No1 for a competitive term is much harder, if you are not getting the traffic, you need to do some keyword research and find out what people are searching for, then optimise for that, start off one at a time and try to dedicate a page to each term, once you have achieved that you can start to broaden it a bit.

Being #1 isn't enough, you will always come down if you don't keep optimizing your site... Traffic is one of the most important part of optimizing site, just be patient and you'll soon harvest the creme of your hard work...

Ranking number 1 is NOT proof that your SEO is good. It is one measure of the success of SEO. But it's not JUST about ranking 1st. Anyone can rank #1 for some obscure keyword and it's NOT going to bring you any traffic and/or conversions (how ever you measure conversions - getting an email address, making a sale, getting a click on CPC affiliate link or Adsense ad, etc.)

A good SEO knows how to select keyword phrases that are going to drive traffic and result in conversions, how to organize a site so that you can rank for lots of keyword phrases, making the site's URLs rank for those keyword phrases, and making the content at those URLs such that once users arrive they will be most likely to convert. A good SEO knows how to balance usability w/ SEO and when to choose one over the other.

It's not JUST about ranking... Ranking is just one part of the complex equation of "grading" your SEO skills.

There's no real glory in ranking 1st for keywords with no serious competition. There's even less glory in ranking high for keywords that do not generate enough clicks. Why don't you use Google suggest to get ideas about related keywords that would generate more traffic. That way your work would actually pay off. Good luck.

Having a good keyword domain helps. However your asking if being at the top of Google is proof your SEO skills is good enough.
What I meant is if you can get your site to rank top for the keyword
"massages" compared to just a single niche like Kauai Massages only shows your ability as a SEO.

Actually, the OP brings up good point. I think you can fall into one of three categories:

1) Chase and succeed with algorithmic changes to stay on-top of the super-competitive, high demand keywords
2) Top the nonsense keywords - I mean, who is top for fgjdhgfsdsfyzd fc?
3) (My tactic) Pick keywords which are in demand and converting, but have little or no competition. You can mop up the edges and not have to invest much You get a nice balance of rankings - enough #1s though to make yourself smile.
