No, Google doesn't know everything and that's why I pay for permanent in-content links on topic-relevant pages... precisely because Google can't know that they are paid. ;)

But it's wise to recognise what is within Google's capability. They can recognise most sitewide footers to vastly different topic sites - and deduce from the type of destinations that those footers were sold links. They can figure out from boxes labelled "Sponsors" that the links that follow are paid for. And lots of this is stuff you can find in their patent applications. They may not be using all that they've patented but it would be foolish to assume that they can't. Bear in mind also that they have a lot of human reviewers whose input is used to fine tune algorithmic detection.

Even if you don't believe conspiracy theories that they cross-reference data from multiple properties such as Analytics, Adsense etc., I'm glad you accept what I've been saying all along - that Google can detect 3-way links and probably already knows many of them.

Do one three way and it's impossible Google will know, I agree with that. Do ten 3-ways using exactly the same site A and C... and it's pretty easy to catch you out both visually and algorithmically. Most webmasters target a lot more than 10 links in their 3-way link building. Sure, you can use multiple sites in your linkbacks but it's all a matter of scale: do it small scale and it's likely to not benefit you. And the larger the scale the more easily you're detected.

I think it's safe to say that Google uses Analytics and every other app at their disposal to improve their algo. I totally agree with that. If you read between the lines in Google's FAQ about Analytics they basically say that they use the data.

The keyword you missed is "can detect some 3-way links". The point is that I don't see how they could detect all of them and do it accurately (i.e. not penalize those who have natural 3 way links). Detecting a 3 way link and determinig that links intent (good or evil) are 2 very different things.

Finally we Agree! The thing is, a lot of people use multiple sites (like Pornhub) to do their 3 ways. Many times the links look more like: A links to C and D links to B where A & B have the same owner and C & D have the same owner. Hopefully, in the future there will be a stop to all of it.

By the way, despite the fact that I argue against your point, I acutally hope you're right and I'm wrong. I would love to someday wake up and see all of the cheaters removed from the first 10 pages of Google search. :D

point is if we see from coding point of view.. if google starts detecting such links... then algo and coding will make google slow...?slower.....

do they use their resources for such jobs?

or they get activated when someone complaints..... my be a competitor...unknown competitor in the same niche...

That's something I've said waaay back ;) Other things being the same, the more links you make the easier it is for G to catch you. Do one single link and nobody will ever know.

Also, some sites can get away with a bit of 3-way if they are otherwise very strong e.g. a PR7 with hundreds/thousands of genuine links from .edus. Again, it's a matter of scale. A site like this may be able to get away with a little bit more, not massive spamming.

Google doesn't necessarily always care about good or evil. They do what they do and sometimes there's ancillary damage, they accept that. Remember the canonical issue: Google went ahead with a dup content penalty for sites that hadn't set a redirect from non-www to www. And it went on for about two whole years!

candychip, it won't make the smallest dent to speed.

Some really good advice. But link building is a two way thing. It not only increases your popularity with the search engines it also draws traffic to your site. Of course relevant related links are best, but getting mediocre links isn't all bad is it?

Yep. And again I agree. Looking back on our convo I think we may have been arguing about 2 very similar but different things.

    I agree 100%

A good point. They should though. Penalizing white hat sites is wrong. I don't care how many black hat sites get taken down with it.

As long as some bloggers pay me to put their link on my PR4 blog, I really concern about PR and I don't care about SERP

Exactly! Google's search engine and Analytics are both produced by the same company, therefore they must be used to perform the same functions. This is why Yamaha lawnmowers double as musical instruments while their DVD players can cut my fucking grass...

    LogicFAIL!

hobopon, I think your reasoning fails a bit. Dglassman didn't say that Google Analytics earns you money (the Google equivalent of your lawnmower example).

He's talking about information sharing. And how would you know if a Yamaha materials engineer who worked on the lawnmower body didn't also work on the material for the piano body?

We'd don't know for sure whether Google shares information across departments but they sure as hell can!

That's quite possibly the worst analogy I've ever heard. It's safe to say that Google uses analytics data to improve their search.

I would like to ask one question.I am into websites development for my clients.lets say i make 3 sites A,B,C and in them i put the site wides link(footer or header doesn't matter since they are my own sites) to each other. Is it going to hurt the sites??
Lets simplify it more these are my own personal sites. Two are blogs and one is a forum (its just a example becz i have a query) So linking them each other gonna hurt.
    Thnx

Don't really agree with you on the sitewide links as if you check some of the top viewed articles over at ezinearticles and even some of the marketing videos at youtube then you will see they have purchased or gained sitewide links and that has given them top spot on google.

Okay getting only backlinks from one site and no others is a bad move! However mixing them up is the way to go!

However your spot on with the directory's... why would you want a backlink from a PR0 backlink directory with 1000's of other links on it anyhow?? the only good one that i would suggest is DMOZ.

This is the way to get the most relevant backlink. I believe having your RSS feeds placed on high authority sites as well gets results.

Ask yourself these questions and be honest with how you answer:
    1) Are the 3 sites relevant to each other?
    2) Would a user of any one of the sites be interested in visiting the others?

If you answered yes to both then go ahead and link them.
