For their intended purpose - to share bookmarks among your friends, and to use them as an online bookmark repository instead of having to rely on importing bookmarks from browser to browser (or even losing your bookmarks if you lose your computer).
I completely agree with Dan. If you use social networking platforms honestly and do what they are intend to do then it is going to help you in the long run. Unnecessary cluttering of marketing promos on these sites will take you nowhere
Social bookmarking will deliver good traffic if you have something that people are interested in. Like for instance - If you wanted to tell the world a new shocking news story about a member in congress. It doesn't have to be to that extreme but it has to be something that gets interests. That makes people want to click. Like others here have said it should only be a very small aspect of your SEO plan.

It's the same as forums or blogs. If you can post anything on a forum which will interest people (pornography seems popular from what I am told) then people will visit the site. Apart from making sites rank highly the marketing side (which presumably should not be in this forum) is about good content which people want to read. I have a blog but few will read it because few want to know what is in it. That's fine as I was just experimenting with blogs really.
yes i have to agree with you guys.. social bookmarking is a good way of getting a huge traffic...just make it sure that you'll write an article that can catch the attention of the reader.
