How come certain websites get images beside their results? One example of this is YouTube, but there are many others as well.
They are video thumbnails. Your best chance of getting them, is to have videos hosted on your site (not embedded youtube videos) , and have a video sitemap. You need to create a thumbnail for the video, and have a reference to the image in the sitemap. That's how I got mine. Hope that helps Cheers James
Interesting, thanks for the explanation on the video, I have been wondering why this was for some time. I have also noticed that some sites (universities and such) have a search toolbar in their result as well - I'm sure it has something to do with the size / popularity of their site...
Those are video thumbnails. If a page contains a related video, a thumbnail should appear along side of the result.
This is just another example of how important videos are becoming in the search engine world, Google included. Embedding videos is going to become a requirement rather than a novelty.
The video sitemap only tells the search engine bots about the file that is embedded in the page. If it's an embedded flv/swf "video" or "game" doesn't really matter because Googlebot doesn't watch or play it, it only indexes it You can go here to find out how to make a video sitemap Cheers James
Thanks for the images. Those site was seen on the results to emphasize that the video or images is ranking for that keywords.
