Is 1&1 any good?

Is 1&1 any good for domain registration and hosting? I was thinking of getting their Home Package with 2 domains and 6 months hosting which is relatively cheap, but I figured I should check here and see what you guys think about 1&1 first.

    What is the consensus?

1&1 suck dont use them, the hosting sucks, they make it impossible to cancel an account, and if you don’t do it correctly they will keep billing you, i try a buy a domain from them two weeks later no domain and no money.

When they first launched here in the US, they offered a year of hosting for free. Their signup form would not work in Netscape back then and they didn't seem interested in a fix or even signing up folks via an alt method.

    Never looked at them again.

They also host spammers and large portions of their netspace is blocked at our routers. Been that way for years with zero response to all complaints. (Not that that matters to most folks around here...)

I have used 1and1 previously for shared, dedicated and domain services, Good support and overall a great company. It's helps that they are so big!

They locked my website and sent it to collections because they broke the payment system for 2 days. :) The only people you can contact in their support are from India and have no powers... I spent 8 hours on the phone with them... Lovely memories.

    I don't suggest 1and1.

1and1 is kind of good and bad. Some are lucky and others aren't. I'd recommend just sticking with domain registration as my experience has be quite hassle free. The only main advantage in using 1and1 is to get free privacy registration. :)

I can't transfer domain name from an account to another account (both using 1&1 registrar) without having to pay a year's renewal fee! (although a year's time is added to the expiration date)

Can anyone do this without paying the fee?

I believe most domain registars are like that. You have to pay something to do any sort of transfer. It changes the ASN codes so interaction with ICANN occurs and there's a fee for that.

Typically domains can be pushed from one user to another 'without' a transfer process. Transfer term is used when you are moving the domain from one registrar to another - and thus a renewal fees (which is in fact cheaper - as compared to new registration charges)

With regards to 1&1 - most of the reviews on the internet place them at the bottom of table for quality and reliability. I have personally never used their services.

    Thx

They have a couple of issues here in the UK (in my experience).
Support is woefully bad. My most recent call involved asking about a nameserver change on a domain. They didnt know what I was talking about.
Thier e-mail hosting packages are very cheap but have experienced performance problems in the last year.

I use to register a couple of my domains on 1&1. Not having any issue with it so far. I don't have any experience using their hosting though.

I have been through all the above.
    1. don't buy domains from 1 &1, you may lose them.
    2. hosting is good but better hosing can plan(s) can be obtained from other vendors
    3. If you are serious in website building and expect good traffic then go for BLUE H
    hope it will help all

I will not use 1&1 for domain registration anymore even they offer domains for free. 2 years ago I had 30 domains registered with them and I had to spend days to transfer them away. The domain control panel has limited functions. Domain cancellation and the auto renew options are hidden (there is no link at the main control panel). Every time I had to go to the help menu to find the correct url to use this option. There is no way to bulk edit domains. If you have more domains, then you need to take days off your work to manage them.
