Probably not many people will know this so I thought I'd share this with you guys...

Say your keyword is "nike air max 90 trainers" when you google that in quotes google says about 4k competing pages, but that's total BS!!! If you go to the last page of the search results there's actually only 170 pages! So next time you search a keyword in quotes to check the competition go to the last page and you'll see the actual number.

    Hope you found this useful.

    Jay.

Wow - your right...it does say that. At least google is telling you the truth on page three. Just do AllInTitle:nike air max 90 trainers - this gives you 837 sites competing for that phrase.

I suspect that there really are 4k completing pages but they are only chooosing (for whatever reason) to show you the first 170. Maybe their servers are running out of cache space :)

I think you'll find google lies about competition for just about every search term, try some yourself and you'll see.

It could also be a part of their algorithm to eliminate a number of sites that have repeat pages featuring the targeted keyword, therefore in reality there ARE that many pages that match the desired target however many of the pages are eliminated from the listing to provide only the most relevant ones for the searcher as well as not list sites with repeat pages that load up sections of their sites in an attempt to artificially gain rankings.

It's not telling you lies at all - you're reading things into it that aren't there -
    Results 1 - 10 of about 6,740,000

    - no where does it tell you these are 'competitors'
    - no where does it tell you it's going to show you 6,740,000 results

ROFLMAO Google is not tell "lies". They are simply choosing to not show 400 pages of results... they are only showing links to the first 170... Who in their right mind is going to look past page 3 or 4 anyway if that? WTF should Google provide links to 400 pages of results when 99.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of the people will only look at the first few pages of results? It's the law of diminishing returns...

The cost of adding the other 230 links to their results far outweighs any benefits that having them there would give their users so they drop it. Are there 4000 pages in the results (i.e. in their index for with that exact kewyord phrase on the page)? Sure there are... They are just choosing not to list them. If there were 180,000,000 results like there are for some of my keyword phrase, I suppose you would expect them to allow you to scroll all the way to 180,000,000 as well huh?

I'm sorry but I'd rather keep Google fast than have them spending a bunch of CPU and time building a bunch of links that absolutely no one except *cough* maybe you will use. I honestly don't know why they even show as many as they do.

Google was built for users to find information they are seeking on the web... not specificially for you to "spy" on your competitors. If you can't find what you're looking for in the first 100 results then you probably need to refine your search anyway.

    Nor do I.

I know what your saying but the point I'm trying to make is if you search a keyword phrase in quotes or allintitle google gives you a false number, there's no two ways about it. If there just simply choosing not to show all the results then I don't see what difference that makes.

If they say 4k competitors and they only list 300 then the truth is you only have 300 competitors, and 95% of them are doing absolutely no SEO work for that keyword phrase anyway.

And you said..."*cough* maybe you will use" If you cant simply have a discussion without being an asshole then don't bother.

On both accounts above, the point is that just because a page is listed in Google's index, which has that exact phrase on it, does not mean they are "competitors". Sites that mention that particular phrase, while writing a review on the best sneakers, or maybe a personal blog entry, where someone tells what kind of new shoes they just purchased...or something of the sort, are not going to be in competition with sites, who are selling those sneakers. They are still in the index, however, as they contain that exact phrase, which was searched.

Just because the list of results does not go past a particular page, doesn't mean that the ones that actually show up are all optimized for that phrase. It merely means that the page contains that phrase.

    Does this make more sense?

Yes it makes sense, but I don't see what that's got to do with what you quoted. I'm not being an ass btw I'm just saying.

    Hi,

I don't think there is any reason for Google, a search engine giant, to tell lies. I guess it is their policy to show fewer pages.

They have no reason to lie. It could be a part of their result system. They have their own algorithm to follow. May I ask you? what can they get from lying to their people?

Those search result numbers are combination of keywords phrases that you search.
When you actually search a keyword, algorithm calculate its stuff and shows you relevant search result assumptions, which could suit your query perfectly, so that's no BS, but a part of the system.

It's not the best method to check your competitors. You can try the Google keyword tool..
