Google is now providing autocomplete function on their search page. This is providing some funny results as you type in the start of a question like "why do" or "why is there". I have seen some results that look like people are gaming the system so I was wondering how I might get a result like "why is acme widget the best company to buy from?" to show up for "why is". Any ideas?
i really dont like it to be honest, it might work for most people, but some keywords are shadowed for some webmasters i.e. (it might give the plural of a word with the S at the end while you have a site with the singular form of the keyword)
I would agree there are some cases where it can have a negative effect. But I do like it when it helps to spell a brand name and then shows brand/name combinations. And I do like that I can type in a word and find out what related terms are suggested and might be good for SEO. But that's not what the thread was about.
I think the suggestion data is from use search history, so it will be more difficult to cheat after apply IP filter etc.
I wouldn't call it cheating, it could help us off set some false advertising of a competitor that claims to be the biggest in the niche while they are clearly our distant second. If they did something right to get their claim into a result, I want to figure out how they did it and get my site into a similar spot with our correct claim. It's like good clean SEO work. It was in Google Suggest for a number of years, Yahoo search has auto complete. It's one of the better applications of the Web 2.0 technology known as AJAX. If you get used to it, you will find it great for assistance in spelling and if you program you will appreciate how it can help in standardizing the way people spell things. For example, I have a site where people enter their job title. Before implementing AJAX auto complete, I had 10 different spelligns of Administrative Assistant and 7 different spellings of Senior Engineer, now they all start typing and choose something that is already entered. It provides much cleaner, more valuable data.
