Hey guys I recently installed a popup on my website. Just one. Its for when they leave my website a popup comes up offering one on one help. Is it a bad idea to have this popup? I know people hate popups.. but generally I hate ad popups.. a helpful useful popup doesn't really bother me.. what do you guys think? If you want to see the popup go to the link my my sig and then after the homepage loads, leave it and you will see the popup. Tell me what you think.

I'd like it if you share your experience with popups and if you have them on your site and if they are useful or pros and cons? Or if there are any better popup scripts out there? Thanks guys :)

I made a comment to someone else asking for a review on their site about this. They have a pop-up when you try to leave the site.

I personally hate them, I especially hate the ones that are (I think Javascript) that look kinda like a browser native alert and so I have to actually pay attention. -- I know thats the good part for the site owner-- but as a user, I will likely never come back to that site.

I second that. Pop-ups are annoying no matter what they are used for. Try to avoid them as much as possible.

Ahhh they are the worse kind! I hate them things trying to get me to stay on their site. I clicked out for a reason I don't want to stay. I would say about 99% of people always click OK just to close the damn thing.

    Popups are bad. simple.

If you use FF, the popup would not POP any more. So, I would like to say a popup ad is not a good idea this day. :)

Same thing I recommended to my ex-boss who wanted to put a jquery pop-up when someone leaves a site without registering and ask them why they didn't register. I think it's a really bad idea.

This is a great way to make someone who was thinking "maybe" to hate you and your site.

    ROFL.

About the FF not showing pop-ups... I have to disagree. When I have NoScript and other blocking addons turned off, some sites still manage to pop crap up somehow once in a while. So no, FF doesn't stop all pop-ups, but it certainly helps.

I have firefox. I still get popups constantly. Oh well doesn't bother me too much. Most sites only have two pop ups max and I usually have lots of windows open anyways when i'm researching or trying to find a site.

And.. you said make someone who's thinking maybe hate my site.. or it might make someone that was thinking maybe that was going to quit anyways shoot me an email.

95% of the people going to my site will only go there once in their life.. so if they shoot me an email maybe I can talk to them and get them to try it out. Most people will think the website is old or they'll think it doesn't work or they'll think it's too much reading.. i dunno.. surprisingly i've only had one person email me lol.

From the view of normal user, pop-up is bad...and they will hate it.

But from the point of marketer, pop-up is like a sales people working for them.

So, no point to make this matter as an issue.

Otherwise, the discussion should go in this way:-

    1) As a site visitor, do u like pop-up?

    2) As a site owner or those marketing the products/service, do u like to use pop-up?

    Cheers..

If I want to leave, I want to leave, if you ask if "I am sure I want to leave" then the answer is gonna be yes, and I'm not going back to put up with that all the time.

As you said yourself, people hate popups even if you have only one on your site. I never use them, because a visitor that is annoyed by popups on your site, never return to your site again!

I cant stand popups, the only ones that i think that are acceptable are the type that i think are called Modal? forgive me if i have the name wrong, but its basically the sort that will allow someone to login to an area without the page changing, i mean without them having to go to a new page.

I think having pop ups on your site would cause your visitors to not come back again. I personally hate when pop ups appear when I'm navigating away from a page.
