    Hi,

I want to know that why always xml sitemaps are preferred over others? why it is good to have a site map in a site? Is there any other reason except this that it is the easiest way for finding something on the site.

    Thanks & Regards

The other important reason is that it makes it dead easy for search engines to crawl your site. Submitting a sitemap to Google webmaster tools is pretty much standard for me for each new site I build. SY

You can use txt sitemaps for yahoo..
But, the main advantage of xml sitemap over txt is that xml can contain more information in a smaller filesize.

XML can be read like a database file so it's easier to integrate into a web service.

yes for google, it should be in XMl format or XML.gz (compressed) and it shouldnt be more than 10MB, yahoo uses txt, ie urllist.txt or something like that.

All of the major search engines support the XML sitemap format. Since the dawn of publishing, printed materials have used indexes to reference areas of the material that would allow you to skip to the info you wanted. In the beginning, this was the role of the sitemap... to help your visitors find their way around your site.

As time went on, the focus of sitemaps has become to get recognized by the search engines. A recent study between UCLA and Google was published on the use of sitemaps. It reports that of a large sample of URLs they processed which had been seen by both Sitemap and Natural Discovery methods... that 78% of the URLs were seen on a sitemap first.

Today, the main reason for using an XML sitemap is to get noticed quickly and to keep the search engines notified if anything major changes on your site.

XML is powerful. I'm sure that most of the Wordpress bloggers use XML-Sitemap plugin which generates - guess what kind of sitemap? XML, that's right. The plugin also gerates a compressed .gzip sitemap and Google Webmaster Tools seems to love it. I never had a doubt of XML Sitemaps being the best. I can't give you specific information of why I think XML is the best but I know Google did not complained about my XML Sitemap.
