I'm a complete newbie to all of this...can you help me understand this? MANY thanks in advance!!

I have read that to find niche keywords seach the word in quotes and the winner has lowest search results and high search volume in the google ky checker. I did this, found a short term with with 368,000 searches per month and 239 results.
Excited...lol...bought the keyword in a .com domain name.

But it just occured to me that those low results are only in quotes, without them the results yield 620,000. I certainly don't think I can dominate that. Did I mess up in my excitement or do more people search in quotes that I realize?

The strategy you mentioned is not very accurate in finding good keywords. It doesn't really matter how many total pages target that phrase. You should instead analyze how strong the top 10 results are. You need to see if you can compete with those particular sites. Check where they use that keyword on their page...title, url, h1, h2, bold text, etc. Also check how many links they have. If possible, dig into those links to see how they are dispersed by PageRank, anchor text, etc. I use SEO Elite for this, which is a worthwhile investment.

to dominate keyword with 620 000 results is not really a rocket science.

i'm not an expert or guru in internet marketing but within a month i'm able to ranked at #2-5 position in google and #1 in yahoo for my targeted keyword.

i'm talking about a keyword which have 13 400 000 results in google and 46 900 000 results in yahoo.

just some reminder, if u use google adword tool, make sure u change the option to 'exact' phrase instead of 'board' phrase or 'match' phrase

I can't see this on the Google Adword Tool (I use the UK variation though, is this slightly different?)

Thanks for all your answers! I completely missed the "phrase" match option in the tool and will be sure to use it from now on. Luckily I think I'm able to work on a couple different keywords that are related to my new domain name instead. The competition on these seems to come mainly from yahoo answers and blog comments. It seems I really need to read and learn some more.

JoinStation, thanks for the recommendation, I'm downloading the trial right now. :)
