I am in a contest in my city, you take a picture, who ever gets the most people to put there email in the box next to you pic and then check there email to verify that email excists to get the vote wins money. Is it illegal to create mutiple new accounts and just keep filling them in? Its not spamming is it since account belongs to the person that made it which is me??? There a program that makes them easier but legal? What i am asking really...in a contest like this...is it illegal to keep making new emails and verifying them? Not sure if i am in the right section but curious...
Wouldn't be illegal but could be seen as suspicious if loads of emails are being entered in a short span and if they found out you would probs be disqualified.
It's probably not illegal if we're talking city law wise. But the contest rules and regulations most likely prohibit that kind of thing. You might get disqualified if they find all those e-mails coming from one I-P address.
Yep and it kinda sounds like the competition is there simply to build a hugely untargeted list, unless they put a reason for signing up to that list (like to be notified of something) then they themselves are going to be subject to loads of can spam violations
Well the purpose for the contest is exposer. It was a thing a store setup, you take a picture with there mascot and then it gets posted online, whoever gets most votes gets $1000 and put in an small ad. But we are not talking huge voting numbers here, i sit at around 100 and leader sits at 170, they go up about 5 a day... In the end, can they can see ip address's and what not? Or will they just see highest number and give the reward? Can you pay someone to create real email accounts and verify them? not 1000, but 100 or so or is that illegal? Or buy a list of emails and passwords and I do all the entering on my own time slowly daily?
I would definitely say thats cheating by my standards but if they have no rules againist nor if they don't check for that kind of thing, then I guess power to you but you should really play fare!
What really blows my mind, is the leader, a 3 year old girl, doesnt get any votes all day long but between 11-7 during the night her votes always jump, one night by 70 votes. How is that really possible that during the night, someone put there email in and verified it? I am guessing kid has a parent who works at a call center or some kind of business where they have access to computer to make emails all night long. Its cheating in a way but not cause they are all separate email accounts, all made by someone, all verified by someone. Do IP address show in a contest like this? can they track where they came from?
IP addresses show in the email headers but in this case, when you click the opt-in link they will log the IP then
its not illegal at all, but i would say it is extremely likely that it would be at least frowned upon
But what bothers me really, it seems to be that whoever gets or knows the most computer knowledge wins online constests like these. It isnt people going door to door for a vote. Its people plastered on facebook or parents making up fake emails. I just dont want to break the law. Is there anyone on here that you can pay to make emails with passwords? or just make the emails and confirm them themselves? Nobody answered that yet....i thought i read something on email creators for 15 cents each or something...
It depends on how much tech savvy the contest organizers are! If they are asking for e-mail verification, they probably should also be aware of the mis-use of the same. But knowing about the abuse and actually able to establish the same are two totally different things. Having IP detection done for each e-mail address is something I doubt they would have time or resources to do! If you feel alright going about it and worth the risk and effort, go ahead! Regards, RightMan
Hoe difficult is it to track ips? So at the end of this constest, they wont have some very nice spreadsheet showing every email, the times, and the ip or where each came from? That would need a genius?
Lol anything but, and if they are even semi-smart they can even check your location, browser and browser version from your IP, it's really too easy
I guess it depends on how much money is on the table - you could try I guess, but I doubt the police will come after you. Disqualification at worst?
Here is the website if you wanted to see the actual contest, youmatter.ca/ The rules are on there too if you want to see them. Very simple. Total prize is $1000, who wants to vote for me to help me out? Lots of users on this site that could help me out. Also you guys have been very helpful so far, greatly appreciated.
I think you're looking for money in the wrong place if you're having this much trouble with it, I suggest you make money by actually working, it's much more satisfying and if you actually work you'd probably make more than 1k in the same amount of time.... write articles, post on forums, anything you can do, post it in the buy, sell, trade section once you're able
