Has anyone had any experience with godaddy.com hosting packages and SQL databases that could give me some advice on which hosting plan to select? I currently operate a web site dedicated to celebrity autograph collecting. Over the years, I have been keeping track of celebrity addresses in a MS Access database. I want to register a domain name with godaddy.com and be able to offer my site visitors the ability to query my SQL database for specific addresses. Through godaddy, I am able to select Windows hosting or Linux hosting. What platform would best be suited to what I'm trying to accomplish - Windows (with support for MS Access/MS SQL/MySQL) or Linux (no SQL database support but ability to use PHP/CGI)? The obvious conclusion I draw from this is that Windows hosting may do what I need on day 1, but am I limiting myself in other ways by going with Windows over Linux? Thanx in advance. Tom
Just to warn you about Godaddy hosting services, I've heard over and over that they are no good, so while it's ok to get your domain there you should get your hosting elsewhere. Some reviews. http://www.selfstartersweeklytips.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3534 <--- this is good. http://www.ftpplanet.com/cgi/_listr...NAME=Go%$Daddy.dat&URL=http://www.godaddy.com http://www.besthostratings.com/web-hosting/reviews/GoDaddy-Reviews.html http://error.wordpress.com/2006/01/01/godaddy-sucks/ http://www.zymic.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=9649
GoDaddy hosting pretty simply sucks Not recommended at all. I hosted my site with godaddy for around 6 months..moved to hostgator and have seem a huge difference in site speed and perfomance...GoDaddy is terrible. Stay faar away from them. For the other part of your question, I prefer Linux hosting
I prefer servage.net! they are good....SPEEDY....and provides u a loooot of space .... for $7.95 you get 75 GB space, 1100 Bandwidth, free domain name, and unlimited domain hosting.... I myself consider buying hostgator....but i think servage gives u a better offer. When you buy from servage you can enter the coupon code "everythingfree" to get 5 GB extra space!
Something close to 80% of all sites are hosted on Linux, so you might as well consider learning. mySQL is really easy to work with if you have any db experience at all. For your project, you could (probably) export your current db to an Excel spreadsheet, and then import it into mySQL. I can't quite walk you through it, but I'm thinking it will work. If someone thinks I'm wrong please tell me, I want to know. Good luck, MGH
yeah even, I find their prices and support very bad for hosting.. so i moved to hostgator which were excellent.. but not in my budget.. i am with dreamhost till i start making some bucks.. Dreamhost has been extremely good.. so far my site went down only once for 2 hrs.. in about 3 months...
Dreamhost is so-so for me. They've got some of the best deals for any hosting plan (777), and their support is very good (quick responses), but their uptime and server speed have pushed me away. I had about 30 sites at dreamhost, and every other night one of them would go down for 5 minutes at a time. It got very annoying. It made me wonder, what about all the other times when I can't check my site's uptime? Is the site still down? I've heard good things about Hostgater, I've never hosted anything there but a few people have recommended them.
