I have recently created an ecommerce web site and i am having a problem generating any traffic to my site. I have noticed that some of the well known web site don't use the popular techniques such as link exchange and etc. What are good and realistic ways to market my site.

Well through link exchange you get basically 2 way links. Thats not the best for SEO.
Use blog comments, social sites, article submitting and so on.
There are a lot of ways getting traffic.

If you have a budget, pay per click advertising on Google and Yahoo can be a good way to get traffic. Of course, SEO is a good way to get organic traffic.

I am sorry to say I am in the same boat. I was hopeful about AdWords especially as most web marketing experts say it brings good results. I paid out more than I made in sales, improved the campaign and keyword targeting, still paid out more than I made in sales. You're right BTW, Yahoo Search Marketing is better, I broke even on that.
Now looking for alternate less expensive PPC campaigns since I do have the money and want to make it work... Any review of Clicksor, Infolinks, Adbrite? Asking from an advertiser standpoint, of course, I know they pay publishers very little.

PPC is still effective if you use the right keywords. However, it is getting pretty swamped these days. I know a lot of affiliate marketers are swearing by Facebook ads if you think you have the right product. You can market to a specific audience, which is nice.

Direct advertising is still one of my favorites. Find a related site that you know has traffic, and pay to advertise there. If potential buyers are hanging out there, you know you should see some kind of return assuming your website is decent. :)

Pay per Click advertising gets the best targeted traffic. It does get quite expensive depending on your market. Other things you can do is write articles with a backlink to your website.

Well known ecommerce websites generally advertise through Adwords and other networks on other websites to drive traffic.

I've never owned/or promoted an ecommerce website but buying adspace on related sites seems to be a possible way. Not sure if your budget permits this or not.

I think its a long-term goal not something which can be 'cracked' over night. Landing Page Optimization can help a lot. Take a look at where your users are going once they are on your site and try and take them to the next step on your primary path if they are leaving.

I recommend social bookmarking. I use a site called Onlywire.com that sends out to several of them with one little click. It's generated some very respectable traffic for me.

Then of course writing articles. However, don't just submit to the article directories, also submit them directly to ezine editors. You will have a much better chance of getting published and seeing some real numbers in terms of traffic. There are ezine directories online, that give the editors information for article submission, that are free, but most of the information isn't that great. I prefer the DirectoryofEzines. It's a little pricey but worth it.

That's because such "techniques" do not work. They are only popular amongst the inexperienced.

Your strategy should be to create a line of ads, have them critiqued, along with your site, and then place them in other webmasters' sites.

Once you get some money rolling in, then advertise offline.

Sorry, but for your particular site, that is the only way.

This twitter shit, links, article writing, videos, whatever does not work.
