I would hire a few posters to get your forum going first. Once you have enough posts, people will surely come.

It needs time to let people post on your forum, first there must have what they want, and what they are interested in! So people will come to talk and discuss on your forum!

If your forum is still young you need to hire forum posters then you could have a huge traffic to your website and it could be indexed right away if it has a good content.

Do you think doing all of the content on the forum yourself would work? There must be people out there wanting to put their link on a forum right?

I suggest that your forum should have information for which people are searching for... And your content must be unique.

It is really easy to make content unique on a blog, but how would you make content unique on a forum, since all a forum is pretty much just conversations from a group of people?

You can seed the forum with questions and/or run contests to encourage participation.

Well I am trying to promote my forum the hard way, by not putting any money into getting traffic or things like that. I would like to make some contests, but just not make money a prize. I haven't really seen any forum do any contests that didn't include a prize of money. What would you say for that?

Should I just give in and pay?

You will need to build a community around you. You can't create a forum and expect the traffic to pour in automatically. You need to ask yourself the question - why would someone leave another forum and join mine? What am I offering that is better than what they have already? What am I trying to solve for my visitors that they don't already have? If you are not offering something to help their current frustrations with other forums, then you are really not offering anything for them to come to your site.

As some suggested above, start a contest and give away things. Try revenue sharing for the first 1000 active members. Do something creative that others aren't offering.

Also don't forget to participate in other forums and build your authority - so they know that they can trust your forum and show up at your site.

Thank you for the support this really helps. I really enjoyed reading the thought-provoking questions you gave me, they are really making me think. I guess I want my forum to be for everyone. I want everyone to come and enjoy being in a community of people who like to speak to one another.

Is revenue sharing that big with people? Will it encourage them to click the ads or something? I am trying to first get committed members who will stay with me through the thick and thin. Should I offer them money? I am thinking about making a contest that I will give away something that I have and ship it to someone, only so that it won't really cost me anything, what would you think about that?

I dont think you should offer your users money, because the goal of a successful site is to make money and provide great conent to its users. If you have great content, they will stay!

First, you have to know "who" your targeted audience is. Where those people are at on the internet, and then work out an advertising program to target that group. The advertising could be anything from buying banners and ads, to google adwords, to video blogging.

Starting a forum is the hardest business venture you can do on the internet - literally

You might have to create multiple accounts and put up some "dummy posts" that make it look like several people are participating already. In the beginning, no matter what you do - people are going to visit, see no activity, and leave...regardless of if it's organic or paid traffic. You have to have active topics there, one way or another.

I think you should focus on SEO. However, results may take time depending on your keywords, so during that time, you should hire some posters to get it going, and also try to attract members by posting on related forums with your forums link in the sig, social bookmarking.
Another technique is that - give something free related to the niche of your forum to members who sign up and maxe x number of posts. Mention these in signatures of related forums where you participate, and also write a post on a blog and bookmark it etc.

Yeah, i have been mentioning it in other forums that I participate in, but the problem is that the forums that I participate in are the same niche as mine and I don't have a pitch to get people to switch. What would a good pitch be?
