Is It Alright Not to Have a Niche

I have just decided that I would put a blog on my site. I don't really want to have a niche to my blog to allow me to cover more topics. I like writing about assortment of things. What do you guys think about not having a certain niche on a blog.

You can check out the title of my blog and that is what I am going for.

Not to sure what you mean by IMHO. Sorry.

So, you don't think it is necessary to have a niche. Would you read a blog without a niche? Does it just depend on the content to you?

You can manage blog by writing about different things (mix niches) as well. There is no problem with that.

BTW IMHO means (In My Humble Opinion).

It's necessary if you plan to sell advertising or links. Other than that, it's not really necessary although it would give your site a nicer focus. This might result in greater reader loyalty.

i have a few blogs that are niche specific, and some 3 blogs that don't really have a niche/are mixed niches, and those are the blogs that see the highest traffic, something like 2k uniques a day

You can write about anything you like on a blog, just don't expect it to make any money.

Making money with a blog is 10% about writing the blog and 90% about promoting it. If you don't have a common subject for the whole blog, you're going to find it hard to promote effectively. It doesn't have to be a tight niche - for instance, you might like to blog about sailing, whereas a "niche subject" would be motor boats or yachts - but it does need to have a common theme.

If the subject matter in the blog is all over the place, it's also much less likely the search engines will pick up on it.

if you don't have niche at your blog, you will not get loyal reader.

Imagine this: when you post a graphic design article, people who loves graphic design will come to your blog. But the next article is not about graphic design, and so on. People who likes graphic design will leave your blog coz they don't get what they want & need.

My suggestion: focus on a niche that you really understand. this will help you build great blog with great content...

If you don't ve a niche It doesn't matter at all. Instead it's good for your blog. It can cover more information.

Depends on what you blog for. If you want people to find you then you need to have a focus.

It is totally alright, but when you will start posting, you will know it is turning into some niche. ;)

It would be nice if you had some expertise in some area to use as a common theme, but it's not really necessary. You can blog about anything you want...if you want to blog about a baby taking a poop or standing in line at the bank, you can. There is no rule.

Now...if you want to actually make some money from the blog, you should narrow in on something that you know about, that you contribute good content to frequently, or you will never make a dime.

The only people that can blog about any old crap and still get readers are celebrities, or people that are already known for something. It doesn't work for us regular people...we have to learn promotion, SEO , and marketing.

How narrow should the niche be?

I've been meaning to set up a blog to post my views (often rather sarcastic ones :p) about the current top news stories, is that enough of a niche?

The trouble is I know i'd end up posting about a random new gadget now and then, or some story that just had to be told, would this take away from my niche, making me harder to find etc?
