Why do affiliates never research their keywords?!

    Hay guys,

I wanted to try and get people's opinions on how important they feel aiming for and optimising a keyword is?

When advising my affiliates, usually the best bit of advise I can give to them is to actually focus on a single keyword and optimise it. Esspecially as the penis enlargement affiliate market (in which I work) is an incredibly competitive one.

Usually a quick look at a site's backlinks via a site like Backlinks Checker Tool - Backlink Watch often shows that people are building backlinks for terms such as "click here" and their own web address! For example:

Did you know that if you search for the term "click here" that Adobe Acrobat Reader is number 1?

The reason Acrobat Reader is number 1 for the term "click here" is because THOUSANDS of sites point to it via the anchor text "click here." Now you can see why its important to have actual keywords point to your site instead of generic terms like your own domain name or terms such as "Read now", "Click here" and "More information."

So what are peoples thoughts on keyword optimisation? Is it a dying art? Also do you have any favourite or specific techniques?

I think it as best to get a mixture of keywords, web address, this site, click here etc + a selection of dofollow and nofollow. This gives a more natural look to the link building and google gives it more credit.

A site with 1000 links, all dofollow and all for the same keyword is going to appear very spammy.

Yeah, this is true, you have to mix up keywords a bit on your links.

But also, when you talk about monetizing a keyword, you must understand that means what some refer to as lateral keywords as well. There are so many affiliates out there that don't really understand what keyword research really means. Nor do they understand what it means to monetize it.

For example, I use a software to cross reference keywords from a few different places, a lot of people stop there like they are done or something. This just gives me the idea as to if I want to cross reference the keywords with other sites that can determine better responsiveness in the "true" market area.

There are so many reasons to dig deeper on keywords people and find that golden egg...

As a follow up to my original post, I put together 5 basic ways to research and follow up on keyword research for our affilaites over at MoreNiche

    1) Choose a keyword from Google Keyword Research
I know a lot of people may over look this, including some of our more successful affilaites! But I cannot stress how sometimes checking this out for a mere 2 minutes could be difference between making a $100 and $1,000.

Using this tool you can experiment on what keywords to focus on, find out the levels or competitions and how many people search for it on a monthly basis.

For example did you know that the keyword "penis extender" got 400% more traffic than the term "penis extenders"? By adding that one letter "S" you've just got your potential audience by a quarter!

    2) Include the keyword you are optimising on your page.
On the page you are trying to optimise for a keyword, bold that keyword a couple of times on the page. However don't go over board as the Google boogieman will come get you and penalise your site.

    3) Insert your keywords into your Metatags.
Metatags arn't as important as they once were, but they were help massively. Makes sure your keyword is in your metatags so Google knows where to look.

    4) Use Google Alerts and piggy back on other people's work.
A neat little trick I've picked up. Google Alerts is a programme that will send you a email alert the minute Google picks up a certain term. In other words, you can set it up to tell you when someone is using your keyword, thus allowing you to throw your own backlink in if its from a blog or forum post. Cheeky i know!

    4) The importance of Anchor texts
I know I've already gone on about this, but I cannot stress the importance of placing hyperlinks to your site via anchor texts. Simply put, to help tell the search engines to show your page when a certain keyword comes up, TELL THE SEARCH ENGINES by placing hyperlinks on the keyword you are trying to optimise your site or page for.

E.g. If you are trying to optimise the term "penis extender", when publishing a article on a third party site write something like:

    - "Find out which is the best penis extender on the market today."

    DON'T WRITE:

    - "Click here to find out what is the best penis extender on the market today."

    5) Internal links
If your trying to optimise one page of your site for a certain keyword, you are allowed to have internal hyperlinks from your other pages pointing to that page. Again use the keyword you are optimising as a anchor text for your hyperlink and point it towards the page you are optimising.

This is great advice. I'm just getting started with everything so I only get half of it, but I'd never heard of google alerts or the keyword researcher before (man, you can really tell I'm a n00b) thanks for the in depth explanation. Maybe I'll get some traffic now.
