getting more pages indexed in Google

I have 2 sites and Google has not indexed all the pages,
the sites are a couple years old and get good traffic.

I know I can make more money if I make the site bigger,
I have added a google sitemap recently so maybe it is too early.

Is it a good idea to create a blog on a separate domain and then everytime
I add a page to my site, I could link to it from the blog. Would this help speed up indexing.

    thanks

Creating a blog for the site would be a very good idea to have more indexed pages. Just make sure you only post unique, quality contents to it.

Give google crawler some time before it indexes more pages, keep getting links for your homepage / internal pages too.

blogs are great for both increasing page indexes as well as creating new, unique, and related content. The more content, the more pages indexed, and the more the search engines see your site as authoritive for the subject you are targeting.

to answer your second question, i've had blogs on the same url as the main website, as well as a blog on a different url. I would have to say that I prefer the blog to be on the same url. i noticed higher rankings for the keyterms i was targeting, and i have to assume it is because the search engines see lots of related content within the website itself.

another thought...when you type in "link:" in Google to search your backlinks, i've noticed that when you have multiple links comming from the same url, Google will omit these results?

    thanks everyone,

xpirtdesign, so those links coming from the same url would not
be as strong, I was told it is better to have the blog on a separate domain
because your getting links from another site, not internal links.

what about those people that submit many articles to ezinearticles.com
and link back to their site.

other thoughts as to making a blog on an existing domain or separate

ur heading in the right track. some links google wont count if its from the same domain, and some will (ezinearticles, digg, ect). I dont know why this is because google wont tell me, but im sure google has a way of filtering them. as for having a blog on a seperate domain, i would assume its a matter of give and take. using a blog on your own domain will give your site more content directly and you will develop more links and authority to your site. if the blog is on a seperate domain, you will get links from the blog, but wont have the direct content relationship. so its comes down to preference. i did notice more rankings, links, and traffic when using a blog on my own domain though.

For indexing your internal pages it is a better idea to have a link form your home page to internal pages. Article submission, link building and blog posting are some better options for indexing your inner pages.

increase the number of links on the pages that are not indexed. Also you could remove from your sitemap for a couple of days some of the pages that are already indexed in order to be more likely to parse new pages. Watch out though. if you are not careful google might remove some of the old pages.

I also suggest checking the link structure of your site (that is the menu). Check out if you link to all of your good links directly from your homepage.

my site is a silo structure

what I really need to know is if I should make a blog on my current
domain or separate domain, which is more helpful

1 opinion says on the same domain

To make sure that all posts are indexed - apart from sitemaps, you must also do internal link building - this will increase the probability that all posts are indexed.

Put the blog on the same domain so that the indexed pages will count towards your site, just make it www.yoursite.com/blog and have lots of internal links to the pages that earn you the most money.

Google will count internal links equally as important as external when calculating the PR for your URLs. There is likely no difference. Juice is Juice... However, they likely consider link text from external sites more heavily in their ranking algorithm than they do link text from internal pages... the thought being that you don't control the link text from external pages so those link texts would be more unbiased signals of what the page is really about than would link text of internal links which you might intentionally be setting to specific values for SEO purposes to influence rankings. The internal link texts I'm sure figure into your rankings, but likely carries less weight than link texts from external sites.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both approaches - having the blog be a totally separate site vs. being a subdirectory on your site. I would probably base my decision of which way to go on the size of my existing main site, the backlink profile of my existing site, and the cost of maintaining a separate site.

If you already have a large site w/ lots of content with lots of inbound links to lots of pages on your site, then I would likely go with making it a separate site. The disadvantage to this is that you are now maintaining 2 separate sites, dual hosting, dual web design fees, dual new content generation, etc. But interlinking them might carry more weight from a ranking perspective since it would be seen as a separate site.

If you have a small site and/or few inbound links to inner pages then I would likely put it in a /blog folder on your main site. This will help build out your site, give it fresh content, lots of new pages, simplify maintenance, likely get you more deep links (which helps in getting Google to see your site as an authority), etc.

If you have an existing site with lots (thousands) of pages and they are not getting indexed properly you have an accessibility problem. An HTML sitemap should be created, 2, 3 levels if necessary - this is a very easy way to increase visibility for a website :)

    thanks canonical,

then I should create the blog on a separate domain

    seounique

I have a page called sitemap which links to all 22 tier2 pages
    plus 3 article sitemaps

the 3 article sitemaps have links to all articles
article sitemap one links to 100 articles
article sitemap 2 links to 69 articles
article sitemap 3 links to 77 articles

all article sitemaps link back and forth to each other
the sitemap and article sitemaps are on every page

when you say create a html sitemap that is 2 or 3 levels deep
does this mean I have a sitemap.html with say 50 links to articles
then sitemap.html links to sitemap2.html with 50 links to articles
and then sitemap2.html links to sitemap3.html

I thought this is too deep and will give the spiders trouble,
I thought all pages should be no more than 2 clicks from the homepage

    please explain...

If you want more of your pages indexed, the best thing to do is to submit a sitemap to the search engines. If your site has several thousand pages, its not realistic to have a backlink going to every page.

Get yourself an automatic sitemap generator installed and submit it to your google webmaster tools and your yahoo site explorer account.

And on big sites with over 500,000 pages, rarely will google index all of your pages. Its perfectly normal for pages to missing from googles index. Google is good at crawling sites, but its not perfect.
