If your content is good people will want to subscribe to your site, I have gained almost 600 subscribers in the past 2 months and I only had 2000 unique visitors during that period. Aweber is a great tool as well but work on converting feeds before converting opt-in leads.

First, write good content and the visitors will become royal to your site .
Second, put the rss button in a catchy position .

Forcing visitators to do something it's not a good thing.
If you force them they might not visit your blog anymore.
Improve your content so they will want to read you more.
Also you can try to offer some freebies :).

If you have the content then they will subscribe. On our subscription site, most visitors that come to the site sign up even with email verification and such. Maybe put the first few lines of your text as open and then require a login to get the rest. Depending on what you are trying to do, it may not be a good idea. If lots of traffic is your goal then it may cut it down. If developing a list is your goal then less traffic and bigger list will be achieved. I have found that if you have the capability to register, many will register even if there is no reason. We have one site that uses a CMS that has built in registration. We dont have any content that they need to register for. We dont ask for registration, but every day we get a few that just do.

My big problem came when I tried to move to a paid subscription. People on the internet really want free.

if you have retruning vistiors than they may subscribe..but if your vistiros are new..than cahnces are rare that they will like to subscribe..so first get a lot of retruning and loyal visitors than restrict access to the sites content to registerd..users only :)

I recommend using Friendfeed because alot of people at that websites do subscribe. These people can become your regular readers.

content is the most important thing that attract people.
it won't be good to force readers to subscribe.
