I went over a speed bump on the weekend (driving along extremely slowly and with great deliberation, of course. Ahem ) and managed to crack the central section of the exhaust pipe on my '98 Ford Fiesta. I took the car to my mechanic this morning and booked it in for repair on Thursday. Unfortunately, he refused to give me even a ballpark estimate on the cost of the repair. If he hadn't done good work in the past I would have walked out then and there, but he's always been straight with me. I also understand that the size of the job can increase if you can't get the central pipe out cleanly, so I understand why he'd hesitate to give me a price and then have to increase it later. Fair enough. So, has anyone here ever needed a new exhaust on their car? A standard exhaust, that is, not a pricy custom upgrade. How much did it cost you? If it's a pricy job it'll give me a good excuse to finally get a new car I'd really appreciate any help you can offer. Cheers.
It really shouldn't cost that much. A complete exhaust kit (aftermarket, from cat back) will run about $300. You catalytic converter and muffler are fine, so your looking at about $100 (thats on the high end). I'm assuming you ruined the down pipe, the pipe between headers and cat. That's not a lot of metal and most exhaust shops could bend a new custom one and install for under $100. I don't work at a shop so I'm not certain. I would be wary not getting a quote before having anything done to my vehicle.
Thanks, fordP. Here, have a reputation boost That's kinda the price I was expecting. I was just a little concerned when the mechanic refused to even give me a qoute to the nearest hundred. Fortunately I'm in a situation where money isn't really a problem, but I always like to go into these things with some idea of what kind of bill I'm looking at. They see me coming a mile off with my big wad of cash and a pathetically clueless expression. You should see me try to bluff my way through a visit to the mechanic. It's almost pathetic Yeah, it's the down pipe. Everything else seems fine.
Yeah we do, but I don't want to cut corners by using materials pulled of an old car, no matter how good condition it's in. I have no problem paying the bills, but I don't want to walk in with a blank cheque, all the same.
well i guess if you got the cash then the best way is to go brand new...... but where is the fun in that......... j/k....tell us when you get r dun and what the final was.
yeah just get a new custom one instead of spending the same amount on a second hand one + labour not sure of prices in the UK but its a pretty easy job so wont be much
Some places do custom piping, called mandrel bending. The diameter stays the same even in the bend, no creases. Shouldbt be more then $100 mandrel bent or not.
