Will Google Chrome OS be the Windows killer

As all of you are probably aware at this time, Google has released the news that Chrome OS will be available for netbooks in upcoming year.

I was surprised there wasn't anyway thread in DP about this. i read a lot of articles on TechCrunch, and it seems that the news has shaken industries with a lot of netbook manufacturers currently in talk with Google about free licensing.

Google is the king of search... Microsoft is known for windows and while google may capture some it
wont overtake them just like chrome was a nice try but its not even close to catching the others FF IE ...

Just my view but who knows till it happens :)

Or you could just use Linux with Chrome installed. What is the value added by Google? Not sure what the excitement is about...

I guess it is mostly hype. Walid Abu-Hadba, Microsoft’s Vice President of Developer and Platform Evangelism said Google Chrome OS is here to distract MSFT from building Bing to compete with Google.

I guess Google main revenue is from search, and MSFT is from office. but I still think a free netbook os with cloud backed service might pose a threat in the long term for office product offerings

Google already offers some of the office products online and it has been its strategy to keep all the resources on the net itself rather than keeping it in each individual pcs.
I doubt if google will be able to displace Windows and the statement as quoted by you of Microsoft's vice president does look genuine and could be the real strategy of the search leader! :)

Well, with the Power of Search Engines Google became leader!, But OS is something Big, I still thinks from my on comments that, OS from Google will need alot of time not in 2-3 years

Everyone said that Chrome Browser will kill IE but what happened Chrome is sitting on something like 2% market share after all the hype It could not even pass through Safari, same will happen with Chrome OS, People tend to overhype Google products just because their Search Engine is great but you need to understand that Win-7 is making huge headlines, people are already quoting it as best OS ever. It would take years and years of effort for Google to come anywhere close to Windows which I really doubt will happen.

Killer? That's an understatement. I have the feeling that the Chrome OS will actually go ahead and step on Microsoft's OS like a tiny little bug when it comes out :p

Microsoft have put a lot of money into operating systems and even though they wern't "built" around the Internet, they are actively pushing that now and Microsoft have the knowledge and experience to keep building better operating systems. Google on the other hand are limited to the best search engine algorithm, just because they have that doesn't mean they will be the king of operating systems when they bring out 1 O/S.

The thing is, Google can do pretty much anything, cross platform or individual whatever way you'd like to rate them, an example of that would be the Android platform :)

Heh, not every company is good from the start, it takes time to improve, but from what i'm guessing Google is quicker at catching up then MS is :)

It depends on how good and revolutionary their OS is and how much they get other companies to sell their computers with their OS already installed(which is what Bill Gates did to make Windows so universal, got a lot of big companies to make it come preloaded on their computers).

The average computer user has been learning Windows for the past 15+ years, and I don't think will be in much of a mood to switch unless there are massive benefits to switching. Windows is a pretty decent OS, it runs all the programs I want to run just fine. I didn't switch to Chrome from FireFox and I can't see myself switching from Windows to Google OS on my PC unless its completely amazing (which is going to be hard to pull off).

Firstly when it will be released then it could be used only on Netbooks. Then Google will launch for PCs..

I'm happy with my combined linux and windows system. Have to see it in action first and if it will work for me before I switch over.

100% no. As I see it it will only be a thin OS for light weight notebooks. You cannot compete with Windows 7 that easily.
