So, I want to run my own IRC Network. I've tried searching around the web but can't seem to find any simple guide listing who I can pay to host it for me. I just want a place where people can register their nickname, create their own channels, run their own bots and (most importantly) chat! I don't expect many visitors, just me and a few friends really. So basically I want to buy a domain, set it up so that irc.mydomain.net:6667 is my server, and go on and talk to a few friends. So obviously I don't want to buy a dedicated server to host it. So, I'm assuming I can get - like you can with web hosting - a package on a shared server? Anyway, if you provide such a service, or know of a company that does, please let me know - I have a low budget, and payment will be made via PayPal. Thanks, Jack Harper
you can get a IRCD hosting, a number of company provide such service just do a search on google for ircd hosting.
Ok, I've found this site: https://the-irc.com/ Do they look good? And what 'IRCd' and what IRC services should I pick?
Running an IRC server is much more work than the average/typical user can do, however, with proper guidance and tutorials, it is still a lengthy task. Yes, to install, it is simply edit a .conf (configuration file) after you ./make and install it, but if you want it to be safe, reliable, and set-up *properly*, you might want to look into a company that will help you set it up. Been an administrator on EFNet during the mid 90's, I am sure that you won't have 350,000 users LOL But, none the less, someone with experience that can *show* you while they do it would be the best idea. Good luck.
Hi bratny, Yeah, I've been using IRC for ages but I've never got into any technical other than banning people, registering my own channel, and copy-pasting bot scripts. I'm really just looking for a few channels, so I'm hoping it won't be too high maintenance? I'll kick-ban anybody who pisses me or my friends off .
The experience sounds good. Well, I guess try and go on the search for a VPS or a host that will allow you to run IRCD (you won't really need a Control Panel, it can all be done through SSH), and here's one simple IRCD with instructions... http://wiki.inspircd.org/tutorial/How_to_install_an_IRCd Good luck again!
Thanks everybody. I think I'm going to go with The-IRC. They install the IRCd and any services you want, and it's very cheap. I can't be arsed to check out some reviews but when I do I'll make my decision.
